they feel of sense of acceptance. buying these brands connotate that because they are more expensive they are of better quality, if we own things that are of high quality then maybe others will think we are exceptional. :)

It makes them feel that they are on a par with those in the next economic level up or at least look like it.....

Oddly enough, in my job at the bank, I deal with some very rich people, and see exactly what they spend their money on.... All of these people could easily afford Bentleys and Shopping at Saks

Most of them shop at Walmart and drive 3yrold Accords.....

It's mainly a status thing. In modern human society, the money is what we value a lot. When you buy an expensive bag or buy certain high end brands, it shows people that you have money and have that kind of dominance over others because you are rich.

First because usually it is better quality than non-branded stuff, second because it feels good to have nice stuff.

i've never had money enough to buy anything like that...i have on occation thought a designer bag or dress was lovely and wished i could have one but generally  i cannot tell unless you tell me what is made by whom and its just as easy to break a heal on a $40 pair of shoes as a $200 pair so i'd just assume be able to have electricity and groceries!

it's all about status.  the "look at me, i'm better than you" syndrome.

genuinely wealthy upper-class people do not wear branded items.  Ever.  They leave this to the wanna-be folk.
