Question:

Why do people look down on tourism?

I'm looking for opinions here. I know a lot of people HATE the tourism industry in their regions. I know it can be run wrong and can ruin places, but do people not realize how many jobs the industry can offer to those who can't find work. The economic value it has in this world? It is the largest industry in the world right now. I understand hating certain tourists (trust me, some are just ignorant and rude) but why hate on the industry?

  1. first you ask why hate on tourism? but you end it with why hate on the industry? i know that there's a corrolation between the 2 but

  2. I know tourism brings in a lot of money, but the tourists themselves can be a real nuisance ... I wish when people go on holiday they would treat the people who live there with the courtesy and respect they would expect from someone visiting their own town ... but all too often they are rude and abnoxious ... I live in London (and do not work in the tourism industry) and am only too well aware that without tourism London would be not be the thriving place it is, and I am only too happy to help and talk to polite well behaved people who are truly interested in my country, but sometimes people bark orders at me like I am their servant and I feel like telling them to get out

  3. Some tourism can make the locals feel like whores, with conflicting emotions - on the one hand it brings in money and is great for the local economy, on the other hand, they'd rather not have to deal with a bunch of foreigners who can sometimes be jarring on their sensibilities.

Me, I love backpackers I think they're great and I'd like to see more of them. Tourists - especially the package tourist I loathe with a passion. Still... good for the economy...

  4. I think people just get frustrated when tourist season arrives and it takes twice as long to get anywhere.  Everything gets crowded and the interstate backs up.  I know it frustrates me, I live near Williamsburg and VA Beach and hate traveling I-64 in the summer months.  But I don't HATE the industry.
