Why do people misspell my first name so frequently?

According to this website:

http://howmanyofme.com

there are 47,087 people in the United States with the first name "Lucas". There are also 115,440 people who have "Lucas" as a last name. I get why people frequently confuse my first and last name, but why do so many people (including very SMART people!) misspell it? The most common misspelling is "Lucus". I typed "Lucus" in as a first and last name - it didn't even register as a first name and only 2,400 people have it as a last name. And yet, I've seen people try to spell my name that way on several occasions.

So what gives? Are people just spelling it like it sounds, or is there some vast underground network of Lucuses that didn't fill out the last census?

And should I just be glad that people don't call me Locust?

  1. Yes, you should, Locust.

  2. I know just how you feel about your name being incorrectly spelled Lucas. I have never met a Lucus, and have always spelled it Lucas. My first name is Randi, and especially if I am at work (work through internet chat support) and it says Randi (with an i) many many times, the customers usually still call me Randy (with a y). And I get "thanks sir" all the time. A, the name is right infront of you and is spelled correctly, how do you magically decide to spell it with a Y, and B, since when is Randi a guys name? (Randy is yes, but I have yet to meet a Randi who spells it the same way I do... Not including the Amazing James Randi LOL)

I understand completely! People do not pay attention, nor do they think when it comes to names Lucas

  3. most people don't seem really careful at spelling names, or any other words.

  4. Ah its hard to say why - Majority of people confused by spelling and by difference I had a front and last name that were the equivalent of rumpelstiltskin doubled.

I am pretty amazed that so many people don't ask but manfully try to write down letters that approximate to what they are hearing. I often said put me down as Smith -

Do you have a business card with your name in bold?

You could be Lucas- 'AS' - I had a friend once called ***** with an 'L'

  5. My last name is Erbgut! There is only 1 other family in the world that have that name... + people keep on saying it wrong! Erb for herb and gut as goo-t. *_*
