  1. I think that people associate goths with drugs and crimes for 3 reasons:

1.) Sometimes people will see some of them wearing shirts that may make reference to drugs/alchohol/voilence, or accessories that have chains, studs, or spikes-which some people may associate with gang voilence.

2.) Their wardrobe is usually predominately black, which makes people think that they're usually depressed and likely to be involved with things like drugs or anything else they would try to use to deal with it. That's why many think most of them are subject to self-mutilation also.

3.) Since they dress very differently from others and don't usually associate with many other types of people they're seen as being hateful toward others as well as rebellious. I suppose people just carry this idea over to all aspects of their life and expect it to be how they handle everything..thus leading us back to drugs and crime.

I hoped this helped and I hope things improve for you.

  2. Hahaha gangs?

they look at u weird because u dress weird and  they think u do drugs because the majority of "Gothics"  do do drugs

u feel me? idk im just saying

  3. Outsiders are always feared and people imagine the worst.... that being said, I think the further you are from what is deemed "respectful mainstream elite behavior and looks" the more you are looked down on and people assume the worst.

Would a goth get elected President? Not likely, so they think "oh they must be social rejects" etc etc. It's totally socially constructed though. In days gone by not having a mustache was a shocking thing, today not being shaved if you're a man or having really long is looked down on etc. BUT in certain niches it is a positive (such as models, the arts, "eccentric leaders" like Branson etc)

There is also a movement by the aging baby boomers to further control the young people as they feel threatened by youth culture that they do not understand, and as they age they are loosing power in society. this same thing is the cause of the "tough on crime" c**p we see more and more (that doesn't solve crime at all if you look at the stats)

  4. I just see them as having very dark hearts, but not necessarily as criminals.

  5. well people think that because their usualy probably

steriotypes but the most common reason is that their shirts usualy have guns n that kinda stuff on it or because their hair is long and their boys or that they have a guiltey kinda look on them cause people think of me like that just because i dress in dark clothes and my hair is sided over one eyes with highlights

  6. Because the little cretins are usually the ones doing drugs and committing crimes.

Seriously though, I know, I was a little goth in High school , but you dress and look that way for a reason.  You want to provoke a reaction.  So don't act so surprised when people look at you like you just slaughtered their cat.

I grew out of it because I gradually realized that rebellion of that nature was a form of conformity.  Think about it, little one..

  7. People are worried about people who dress themselves in abnormal ways, then they make assumptions.  If you differentiate the way you look from others, then you should expect to be responded to in different ways.  People also associate black (an often worn gothic color) with negativity.  What you wear paints a picture that might not fit the person.

  8. Well I live in New Zealand, and we dont hear about that stuff here. Not a word. Goths in our country are just seen as a outcast group who dress up and stay to them selfs. Never here about the goths in the news or anything. Ive known a few and they are quite cool, actually intelligent and into computers and arts and say some cool stuff and certainly keep to themselfs. I dont thinks Goths are about drugs, I think they are about the **** in there lives and other Goths can relate. Might look like dark side of the Moon, but theres probaly more people in the closset than goths hey.

  9. i know what you mean.  it's just a stereotype.  me and my friends were like that in school, too.  all the teachers watched our area of the cafateria closely and left the others alone.

but people assumed we were trouble makers and druggies.  ironically, it was the "preps" who sit around talking about the drugs and drinking they did on the weekend.  but of course the teachers love them and they are perfect, right?

we spent our morning playing bloody palms ( a card game that involves slapping cards) or reading (mostly the better scenes from romance novels), we were actually quite peaceful.  in class, we sat near the back and minded our own business.  we got A's and B's.  we were never in the office yet every teacher assumed WE were the bad ones!

the worst we did was sit around doing nails, hair and make-up at the table.  a couple of our friends were cosmotology students and needed people to practice on.

so i know how you feel.  i wear my black HIM shirt and fingerless gloves when i go out.. and in the most crowdest of places i get plenty of space.  when me and my friends go out together we always get a wide berth like people are scared of us.  ugh people are just stupid.  don't they realize the most dangerous people are the ones who look like everyone else?  *shakes head*

  10. Because gothic kids are a wonderful example of anomy, what Durkheim was writing about. Anomic behavior is always looked at as potentially dangerous, but just wearing unusual clothes or listening to a different kind of music is not enough for rationalizing this fear. So people give it a basis they understand - like, you've got to be afraid of goths because they do drugs or commit crimes. This helps them control their fear, while of course it's not a good thing for gothic kids themselves.
