It comes from Cherie, which is French for "darling."

"Cherry" often means "virginity" in slang so I wouldn't use it. Poor kid would get ridiculed all her life. Some parents don't stop and think about the effect of saddling their kid with a name THEY like but is "weird" or means unkind things.
