Why do people need so much horsepower?

Question

This does not concern to people who need it for hauling, construction, and etc. But I just don't understand why so many people need these V8s and V12s... yet they waste so much gas! Escalades, Navigatiors, Expeditions, and all these other luxury cars. Why do people need so much horsepower?

I've seen people who just buy those cars because of horsepower yet they spend 100.00 on gas and doesn't even fill up the car! Are you trying to run from the police or something?

if you have to ask you'll never understand. There are people out there that look at their cars as more than just appliances. Sure you can squeak by with 70 hp but what's the fun in that? If you don't feel you need the hp or desire it then be happy in your civic or whatever and just live life. It's all personal preference.

Usually men have the idea that our cars are us, or at the very least, reflections of us. The horsepower is the p***s, more horsepower..... you get the point. women seem to catch on too, a lot of women want a man who drives a fast car, meaning big horsepower, big ......

Amen...I don't understand it either, I think all the vehicles you just named are big, bulky and down right ugly anyway lol...They probably purchase those cars because they think they need it to feel high and mighty, they think their car defines them, and they are compensating for something. You can just as easily put a smaller engine in a smaller car and it will beat a huge car with a huge engine (it's all about power to weight ratio, not just Horsepower) The only real reason would be if it's a performance car used for racing.

I have a small 4-cylinder (cheap on gas) with 250HP and soon to be 400HP, I use it for speed, I dont like wasting time.  As for the cadilacs and navigators, I think its just a status thing...  they cost like $80,000 anyway.
