Why do people need weather forcasts? Can they not look outside and decide for themselves?

Or does it make you feel comfortable that a rediculous organisation tries to make predictions of a chaotic system?

Could the money be put to better use?

In case you are planning something outdoors where crappy weather might affect your activity.

For example, say you have a game of golf you want to play at 4:00 in the afternoon. Would you still go play if you knew there was going to be afternoon showers?

What may be a cool and cloudy morning may turn hot and sunny within a few hours.

Being able to predict the weather has saved many lives - hot days can kill people who are sensitive to heat, and cold days can turn deadly if the temperature drops / the wind becomes strong.

It's not always about convenience, some people literally need to know what it's going to be like outside even hours or days after they "look out the window".

They have experts in there working out all those maths and physics equations. I'd like to know what to wear on Wednesday on Monday night rather than panic Wednesday morning, for example.  Where Im from it might be 100 degrees in the morning and then in the afternoon its to cold and rainy to sit outside... So they help predi t that and Sure they arent all correct, but its better than taking an umbrella and a jacket and a water bottle all just incase...  Maybe some gumboots... A hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, do you wan to take all that with you everyday?

I can tell none of you are pilots...

A weather forecast tells a pilot what the weather is like at various heights above ground level, i.e. wind speed and direction. This is surprisingly accurate and essential to work out ground speed so you know where the h3ll you are. Meterologists do deserve every penny they get, they've saved my bacon a few times now! The weather forecasts you see on TV tell you next to nothing compared to the amount of information the met office generate for aviation and maritime purposes.

After all of that, no matter what the met guy tells you, it's up to your captain whether you go flying or not as the following exchange shows...

Captain: I'm not happy going in this weather.

Dispatcher: The met says the weather is fine, there's only a bit of rain.

Captain: Exactly, birds don't fly in the rain so why should I?

For most people, looking outside does not help them plan for even short -term future events.  For example, I am planning a trip tomorow, and I wish to know if it will rain.  I have no barometer, and the weather today was clear.

Now, I know that weather forecasts are not 100% accurate.  But "next day" forecasts have a fairly good record, and may help me decide to allow extra time or take an umbrella.

I have seen weather change on a dime some days.

EXAMPLE: one day GF & I was sitting by the river in the shade, sun was out, no a cloud in the sky, and we was injoying oourselves.

I just happedned to look west torwards Ohio and saw dark clouds and something I could not figure out what is was, only that it was making everything look fuzzy, anf that turned out to be a cloudburst heading our way, that caused a flash flood, all within a matter of minutes.

We had just enough time to jump on our bikes, ride a few blocks to City Hall and duck inside before it hit.

Now had we bothered to listen to the weather forcast earlier, we would have leaerned heavy rain was expected for our area.

That is why we need forcasts, even if they are not always correct.

I do need a weather forecast to plan my day here in Florida. The weather is so unpredictable that in the morning it could be hot and sunny, by noon it could be raining and at night it could be cool.

A 'forecast' means weather that is coming, not weather at present. So if you can look out the window and tell what the weather will be like next tuesday, you should be using that talent to make alot of money.

you may be able to look outside and give a 10 day forcast but I can't. people plan trips and outings and most of the time they can predict a weather system that is moving towards you and give you time to evacuate if necessary

Anyone with half a brain knows you can only look outside and determine the present weather. Anything beyond that and you're going to need a weather forecast. Sophisticated computer systems have gotten pretty good at predicting the chaotic system you describe, and will likely improve with technological advancements.

And no, the money could not be put to better use. Weather prediction is extremely important in many situations and applications.

I used to find the old pressure maps really useful.  You could see exactly what weather was coming in off the Atlantic. Now you just get random bits of information which are little use at all.

I'd love to see the back of the weather girls and computerised time lapse displays.  All it needs is a good old fashioned map.

The weather man is usually wrong most of the time anyway.  Mother nature can change her mind anytime.
