  1. Because they are trying to make an impression. It'd be a lot of work and a lot of time to prepare meals like you're having company every single night.

Tell your mom thanks for cooking sometime. I can guarantee you'll get some kudos for that.

  2. because they like to impress the family/guests who are invited

  3. I can tell from your question that you have never cooked...

Anyway, it's because good food needs a lot more effort for preparing PLUS it's less healthy...

When I have guests over, I do not watch as much how much oil and other stuff I put in my cooking and hence it turns out a lot better.

  4. because making really good food takes a lot of time and effort and money, so you only want to do it every once and a while. So, when you have people over you want to show them you appreciate them, so you make them nice food, but you don't want to do it all the time because it's so much work.

  5. why dont you cook sometime then you will find your answer

  6. That's to impress, and is your mom making a statement about herself and her cooking. As long as you are on reasonable terms with her, it's not out of line to bring this up (with her). It's really not. Most likely she will listen. Don't do it at the gathering heehee. Or you'll be washing your own underwear a lot sooner that you wanted!
