Why do people out there honestly think we are stupid for living here?!?

I have read several questions over the last day practically slamming us for living in louisiana, Mississippi, or Florida. Like its our fault there are hurricanes! Is it me, or is it the only people who are doing the complaining are people who dont live in the south. We just do what we gotta do. I'd rather deal with a hurricane with days even a week, sometimes more notice, than an earthquake or tornado that just pops up in your backyard while your fixin dinner!

OMG!!!Thank you for saying that!!I live in Louisiana and i'm sick of people complaining and saying "Well you should just move".Like its our faults hurricanes hit! It's nature.I was born here and i love it!!I've been experiencing hurricanes since i was little and its nothing new to me!People who don't live here don't know what its like so they need to shut their mouths!!!

Yeah, I agree with you. It's like some people assume that Southerners have another place to stay or can afford another home right on the spot. Anyone with a brain knows that it's easier said than done. And if everyone in the South did in fact move north, these same people will be complaining about how their area is overpopulated and that they don't have enough to go around.

Living in those states does not mean they're stupid. There are severe earthquakes in California and terrible tornados in the Midwest (where I live), but you don't see us moving. Our lives do not revolve around natural disasters. We find a way to move on.

I don't think anyone thinks you're stupid, it's just that New Orleans is a major city and it's 20 ft below sea level and when hurricanes like Katrina and now Gustav come along, you guys end up in a world of hurt. Why?

Why not just move up?

people say that because they are not in our shoes.They think that its easy to just leave the place where you've live all your life. Well guess what,? ITS NOT!!!

Ignore those ridiculous comments. No where on Earth is a person safe from natural disasters. The people along the Gulf coast and the East Coast have to worry about hurricanes whereas people like me, who live in the Midwest, have to be concerned about things like tornadoes, severe thunderstorms (damaging winds, large hail, flash floods), electrical storms, blizzards, ice storms, and even major earthquakes.

Everyone has their own problems to worry about, yet some choose to bash those who live in areas vulnerable to natural disasters different than the ones they have to worry about. Even the people who live on West Coast are bashed for living in areas prone to earthquakes. In no way are people stupid for living in areas that are vulnerable to events like hurricanes. I always hope that the people who do live in such areas can live with the fact that they face dangers that are tropical in origin.

In a way, its better to live where you are because you are warned well in advance of hurricanes. Its not exactly easy to say there's an EF5 tornado coming your way three days from now.

EDIT 1: Indeed the condition of the levees makes a big difference. Supposedly, the levees are in a better condition than they were three years ago. I don't remember where I heard or read that, but I'm not sure if its true or not.

EDIT 2: So, you're saying Gustav will be the one who will test the levees? That's not going to be pleasant probably. And if I'm not mistaken, only 80% of New Orleans was under water.

There is no place on earth that can avoid Mother Nature.  People have no common sense about that.  Anywhere on earth you live will have nature disasters.

2.  i think people are stupid that build above ground  houses in [tornado ally].

3.i think people are stupid that build there houses over  a earth quake fault.

4.i think people are stupid that build there houses out in the woods with miles of dry brush around them.

5. i think people are stupid building there houses 2 miles from a active volcano that is constantly erupting every 10 years.

a former coast guards man that saved many peoples  lives when they went out in violent storms in leaky boats, in 15 ft waves.
