Why do people pathagolize that of which they don't understand?

I don't think people necessarily "pathologize" things they don't understand.  I think things that are pathologies are usually quite well understood.  Keep in mind, though, that one key factor for something to be a disorder is that it must have the symptoms, but also must have significant impairment in one or more aspects of life.  So it isn't just a matter of being the "weird kid" or having a learning disability, but that the people who have them also have a difficult time forming relationships, coping with stress, taking care of themselves, going out in public, or holding a job.  Many of them look to others for help, and by understanding their symptoms and their disorder, the treatment process can be both expediated and successful with lower recurrence rate.
