  1. A pub is more than just a drinking place; it is a place in which to meet others and socialise in too, and in many communities (especially smaller ones) it serves as a "focal point".

Mind you, the days of the "good old British pub" could soon be numbered if the price of a pub pint goes up much higher.

  2. Cuz sitting alone in your house drinkin beer from a can isnt quite as sociable as sitting in the pub with a pint? obvious answer really!

In a pub ur paying for the surroundings, the labour and the transport of kegs etc...i'd imagine anyway

  3. Not easy to get a good pint of draft beer in a supermarket. Cans yes . People like to socialize with friends also. Pity they are now not even allowed to smoke there, a tradition which we have had in Britain for hundreds of years and I can't see its done that much harm.  Yet another victory for the do gooders driving their gas guzzling , air polluting 4 by 4's

  4. Pubs are part of our society. I like to go for a pint to relax. Sometimes I like to sit in the corner, read the paper & gaze out of the window. Sometimes I like to  be social. It sad that a lot of people that go on about britishness never make an effort . The pub is very much a part of the British culture & is fast dis-appearing. I mean I could not think of anything more boring & souless than buying 4 cans from tesco . Its cheap & sums up our cheap dis respectful culture.

  5. Why do any of us by beer at all when we can make it at home for only a few pence per pint.

Beer is probably as old as if not older than bread.  English beer is made with malted barley, etc.

  6. more and more people are choosing not to these days

and with a few years of economic hardship ahead, i dare say even more people will choose to stay at home

having said all that, i cant see how staying at home watching TV shouting at simon cowell compares to going out and having a laugh

  7. Where I live it's around £2.60 a pint

I live on the outskirts of Manchester

  8. its crazy, down the seafront in  brighton where i live they wanted £3.35 for a badly served Guinness in a placci glass.i went to the shop across the road & got 4 for £5 & they were cold .

  9. your not just paying for the beer though are you, the pubs like to make you pay for the glass its in, the ice or lemon you can get with it, the seat your sittin on, the people your with, the lights your using, the heating your using...basically their just scamming you off every way possible. I think we should be able to bring our own drink to pubs and they can charge us for NOTHING please.... :)

    Rant over x

  11. £3 is a bit pricey but better that than drinking Tesco's p*ss alone at home whilst being a Billy No Mates...

  12. Is it really £3.00 a pint now?

    Yikes.....

  13. People are unable to manage their money in their younger years to have adequate saving for retirement.

Their thoughts about the cost of beer after they retire will change their beer purchases.

  14. There's no point going to the pub any more.  It's more fun meeting at one of your pals these days.

  15. probally because they want to go out instead of staying in and drinking tesco beer

  16. its not all about quantity............. its also about socialising

  17. I think its called comardarde ship And when Tesco installs dart boards I'll stop by!!

  18. They don't,

Have you not been in many Pubs lately? they are empty.

  19. Don't know about drinking Tesco,s canned beer.

But as its a two mile walk to my local, where I can no longer smoke indoors on a cold miserable night. I now brew my own beer and have my friends around drinking a good real beer that costs less than 30 pence a pint to make and I can choose what time last orders at the bar is.Play pool for free whilst listening to my own choice of music. No argumentative strangers wanting to cause trouble. No fear of being picked up for drink driving

It seems the only reasons people need to go out to a pub is if either they are out on the pull or have a miserable home life to escape from.

So to those that have hinted that people who drink at home are sad loners, think again. We have already got a settled social life and are not desperate to try and find one amongst the sweaty  jostling crowds of belligerent Larger vomiting drunks. 20. Maybe its because there is no such thing as a friendly pub anymore, most have become restaurants and stink. Its strange how the few pubs left are now almost empty after all the anti-smoking brigade got their own way? I thought the pubs would be packed! The traditional pub has been destroyed by condescending do-gooders and I would rather stay at home where I can relax and enjoy the freedom of choice.

  21. And change for a packet of cheese and onion crisps too.

  22. Because of the social aspect of drinking, see your friends, no one wants to pay that amount for a drink, and its partly the smoking ban that has caused many of the pubs to close. I don;t like people smoking at all, but even i can see that it has had a totally detrimental effect on many pubs. If i want to buy from a supermarket then of course i will but that in itself is a bit sad. Sitting on your lonesome supping a beer.

One of my local pubs is so expensive now, that i do not go into it any longer. I think last count was £3.45 for a pint of lager, bloody stupid...

one thing i would add is that there are no good bar staff these days, who you can have a chat with, most are from elsewhere, often with a small command of the English language. And can't pull a decent pint, especially Guinness if their lives depended on it.

  23. If people are content to be ripped off then someone will always be there to oblige.

I used to brew my own beer and I can tell you that to make a gallon of beer you start with a gallon of water so that tells you what you are paying for.

  24. 1. your pathetic....

    2. tesco beer tastes like ****

    3. soon alcohol will be banned from pubs, the way the rules on how we live in this country are going....... and they will soon put tax on our oxygen supply, 1p per breath

  25. Good point--Pubs are a rip off nowadays--when I was a lad you could have ten pints , pull a scrubber , take her for a bag of chips--get a nosh and still have change from 20 quid.

Thanks to Tony "f*ckin" Blair , it nows costs at least 100 quid--and thats just for the Brass!

  26. I dont understand that either.

  27. I don't understand that, and I've worked in a pub lol, I guess for many it's the social part of it, but then you have people in there who sit on there own day in day out.

I can understand, having a pint, a good chat after work, but being in there from open to close 7 days a week, is just silly !

Then again, who am I to judge !

To the person above who seems to be saying pubs are scamming money out of you, Believe it or not, it's NOT the pubs that are scamming you all, it's the brewery ! WE are TRYING to keep pubs open, we have to pay rent for the place, we have to pay councail tax which is at least £7,000 PER YEAR, or MORE, a percentage of the pints money goes to the brewery itself, so where are the pub landlords meant to get the money for people to have there comfy seats, the nice surroundings ?

Sky sports for a pub costs £800 PER MONTH, and you HAVE to have a minimum 12month contract, but then the landlords who are temporary, cannot get a 12months contract because they don't know how long they'll be there, and they loose customers for not having sky sports.

All bills for a pub is through the roof, it's not like a household bill, my sister has a pub and is just scraping through each week, yeah she'll make £3,000 per week, but almost all of that is going on bills, wages, beer etc. You never see a rich landlord do you.

Pub landlords are struggiling ! poor things x*x

She has a small local pub, everyone knows everyone, etc.  It's a nice pub x

  28. They pay for the companionship and the atmosphere of a local pub. Sitting drinking cans on a wall ain't the same.
