Why do people pick on you for liking different things?

I am a 12 year old girl who loves heavy metal. I frown upon things like the Jonas Brothers, High School Musical, Hannah Montana and stuff, but I don't pick on people because they like it. However, they pick on me for loving KoRn, Slipknot and Metallica. If you are a fan of the preppy stuff, can you tell me why some people are such jerks? I'm not trying to be stereotypical--I know that most of you are nice, but all the people I know who are fans of that stuff hate me. Your answers are much appreciated.

You liking those things is not a bad thing,most of the stuff you like I like.People are different and thats a good thing if you like a certain type of music then thats your choice. Dont be ashamed of it! Never hide what you like if you like heavy metal play your heavy metal.Stop always trying to please everybody and do stuff that you love.Me I love pop,I listen to Britney Spears and Jessica Simpson.Many people may not like Britney or Jessica,but thats on them.Do what you love and be yourself.Stop trying to please everybody.IF you keep trying to please everybody and caring about what they think youll never be happy.

That is how kids are. They reject the unfamiliar. Do not let it get you down. Ever hear the sayin people who mind don;'t matter.  yea, be who you want.

I myself, would be considered preppy I guess (I love to sport the Prada sunglasses, Louis Vuitton wallets, Lacoste polos, etc) and I am a fan of emo, rock, metal, and other types of music.  I'm not fake for like both things even though they are totally different things.  But you're 12, people your age scorn people's individuality because they try so hard to fit in by being fake and acting like something they aren't and they slowly lose themselves.  I have to admit, I had to pretend to like those types of music in the past to make myself more popular but I'm in high school now where people respect you for being an individual (well my school anyway).
