Why do people prefer different sinkers

There are a few different types of sinker designs such as, disc sinkers, bullet sinkers, pyramid sinkers, split shot sinkers and much more, but why do some people prefer some sinkers over others?

The sinker, or weight, has a lot to do with what you are fishing for, and where you are fishing...some are designed not to snag as easily, some are designed to offer less resistance to the bottom while drifting, and some are designed to hold the bottom in heavy surf, or current...It is an on going design change for specific conditions, and each has it's own unique application....The actual weight and design of the sinker can help you keep your bait in the "zone", and increase your chances of success....

For the same reason that different people prefer different lures, bait, line color, rods, reels, everything. Some weights have specific uses (like split shot for light lines and sliding weights for Texas rigs), but for the most part, the purpose of the weight is to overcome the buoyancy of the line and bait, and to make the bait sink to the desired level. Just like you'll get different opinions on bait, lures, and rods, you'll get a variety of opinions on weights. Just find the ones that work for you, and have fun!

There are loads of reasons, most of them are down to personal prefercance, i know anglers who will only cast two types of lead because they can get better distance than with others, also some leads dont snag the bottom as easily.

I've read a lot of good responses - and agree with some...

different sinkers for different purposes some for different rigs and uses...

split shot when you need only a little bit extra weight to get your bait down to where you think the fish are..you can always add or remove weight as needed...fast moving streams and rivers are a perfect example.

egg sinkers when you don't want the fish to feel the weight of the sinker when they are running with your bait...

bullet sinkers are usually used with rubber worms - you can paint them different colors to add to the worms attractiveness as bait.

pyramid sinkers are good for gravel bottoms so you don't get caught up as much in the rocks...

these are just a few of how I uses different sinkers, remember sinkers are for whatever you want them to be used for  - many people make their own sinkers - using a melting pot and various moulds...my point is there is no right way or wrong way to use them...

For the most part it's preference.Take different colored line for example.I see no point in red colored line cuz I see it in the water a lot easier than the standard clear color.But hey,use what works for you.
