Why do people put cardboard at the end of a joint?

i was just wondering. also, i tried to light a joint and it just burnt up b4 i could even smoke. what did i do wrong? can you help me?

the cardboard is to keep the end from getting flattened by your lips. if it all  burnt up at once you need to grind your smoking substance better and roll it tighter.

Uhmmm... which end did you light? The cardboard 'crutch' helps some people twist it, while others use it to keep the end from crumbling out while your hitting it... Viva la Griefa!!! (griefa = cuban slang for the weed!)

Idk what your description has to do with the actual question, but ppl usually put cardboard on sharp joints so that the joint wouldn't poke or bother anyone else. (i think)
