  1. No, it increases friction b/t  tip and cue ball.  Ever try shooting without it?  You look like a r****d espescially on the break

  2. Its to change the impact of when the stick hits the ball.

  3. PEOPLE PUT CHALK ON THEIR STICKS WHEN I PLAY BECAUSE IT GIVES THEM SOMTHING TO DO WHILE THEY WATCH ME RUN THE TABLE

  4. it ha suttin to do with when the pool stick hits the ball. the chalf has some sort of effect on how it its and how well it moves the ball and stay the angle u aim

  5. to get a solid strike on the cue ball when hitting it above, below, right or left of center...when you hit it in a spot other than dead center you are putting spin or 'english' on the ball in order to make the ball move to the postion you want it to after striking the object ball ...therefore leaving yourself in good postion for the next shot...

  6. to generate English on the cue ball (spins) you can call it great traction if you want...controlled directions whatever. but English is the term used in pool even in the break you will have it..hopefully a forward roll English to drive into the rack of balls.

  7. To reduce friction.

  8. For the tip of the cue, I think that it's to increase friction. To keep the tip of the cue from slipping off of the impact spot on the cue ball. That way all of the power of the stroke is delivered to the cue ball.

For the shaft of the cue stick, people use a type of hand chalk, or talc, to reduce friction between the stick and the non-power hand. I think it's called the bridge hand.
