Why do people put cucumbers over their eyes?

...and when they do, their eyes are closed right? don't they have to put some special lotion or ingredient on the cucumber?

cold cucumbers placed on your eyes reduce bags and puffyness. but yes, their eyes are closed, and no they are only cucumbers, nothing on them.
