Why do people say NASCAR's not a sport when its in the Sports catogory?

Some do not realize that NASCAR is a sport due to ignorance about what it is really all about..need some education..go to the nascar websites and check it out!! Then come back and say not a sport.....

It involves mental ability as well as strength and stamina..

can you drive at 180 plus with 42 others drivers, sun in your eyes, over 100 degree heat, mentally making your strategy for the next pit stop.....hanging on tight when you sliding on your roof??

I believe that they think it's not a sport because there is no ball involved. And because it's evidently above their intelligance level. They just don't have the brain to figure out that it truly is a sport. More so than others so called sports. One guy I know, told, over a year ago, me that golf is a sport but NASCAR isn't. We still argue over that.

NASCAR is the only sport that matters in our family. The only other sports we watch is the TN womens basketball games & my grandfather watches baseball (Braves or Cardnials only). However, if it coninsides with a NASCAR race then NASCAR wins hands down.

Okay I'm away from my computer for a hour and where the he** did all these people come from there were some on here last night too and made me crazy LOL!! anyway if they think NASCAR isn't a sport than they have no idea what it entails and ya know we really shouldn't pay any attention to them but I always find myself answering them and defending the sport we love!! but hey how do they usually say it? i think they call us hillbilly rednecks or something like that and anyways us "hillbilly, rednecks" have to stick together right!! LOL =:)

A lot of people seem to think that racing is basically the same as driving on the Interstate, only faster.  Plus, they see drivers just sitting there in their cars (as it appears to them) and not running around or anything like that.  

Of course, there are also the tons of people who just want to run NASCAR- and all the people who watch it- into the ground any way they can.  I can't tell you the number of times I've heard all NASCAR fans be stereotyped as stupid, uneducated rednecks.  It's not enough to just say they don't like NASCAR (which I can accept), they have to try to put it down.  You rarely see that with any other sport, including other forms of racing.  There's some weird stigma with saying anything positive about NASCAR I guess.

edit:  They all forget that the games where they have a ball to throw, kick, hit, chase, etc. are "GAMES" and require only 1 ball.  In NASCAR racing, you have to have 2 big ones.

I'm not saying whether or not NASCAR is a sport, just pointing out that your reasoning is imperfect and flawed. The fact that whoever is in charge of designating categories on Yahoo! Answers opted to put NASCAR in the Sports category does not mean that everyone in the world who doesn't already consider it a sport suddenly will.

It's very difficult but my personal perception of sports usually involves more of your body & possibly some type of tool plus running & i think a lot of people just have that as their own personal judgment of what constitutes a sport.

People say NASCAR is not a sport because they don't like it. Those people think that a sport must be played with a ball. Those people have hurt feelings that NASCAR attracts more people than a "ball game" So they will say anything not to compare it to what they're accustomed to as a sport. I think the term most commonly used, would be to describe them as a "big baby".

Anyone with common sense will tell you that it's a sport just like motor cross, x games, and that one really stupid sport in the Olympics where two people skate own the ice, scraping while attempting to keep some puck on it's path of travel.

Ignorance really, they tend to think if you're not running around chasing a ball or something, it's not a sport. They tend to think that driving 500 miles in a 140 degree car at 180mph, with a 15 second break to add gas, and change tires is equal to driving to work everyday(BTW driving 500 miles in a regular car with much longer breaks is a b*tch). Then they have the balls to mention baseball, stand there waiting for someone to hit a ball to you, then sit on the bench wait for your turn at bat or to go back out on the field. Actually technically there are right about one thing NASCAR isn't a sport, it's a SANCTIONING BODY, similar to the NFL and MLB, that just happens to sanction several series in the sport of auto racing.

People think its not a sport cause you are not excersicing physically or running around. People should get over that cause it is a sport as well as there are other things like hunting or just shooting at stuff, these are sports too and dont involve any more physical activity than driving a car!!
