  2. A lot of people raise deer for meat.  Some people also raise deer for their urine and sell it during hunting season.

  3. Game, food, and wild life perserves.

  4. Delicious venison

  5. Yes, deer are raised for meat.  But the larger market, especially here in Texas, is for the hunting industry.  Large, high fence ranches in the state will pay large sums of money for champion bloodline deer with good genetics for antler growth.  It is a really large and competitive business here, so these ranches often employ biologists and buy special breeder deer to keep their herds impressive to hunters.

It seems like shooting someone's pet, but there are people that will pay a good sum of money to shoot a huge deer.  Perhaps to feel better about themselves.

  6. Gee willikers, I don't know. I guess they are just hopefully raised as pets. I'd hate to hear if they are being raised for steaks or sausage

  7. The meat is very healthy.  It has less cholesterol and fat than beef or pork.

The real money in deer farms is raising big bucks with large racks.  Once the breeder achieves this, the offspring of the large buck are highly sough after by hunting preserves.  There was a case here in PA where Sampson, a 2 year old was stolen from a farm.  He was insured for $1 million because of the potential income from his offspring.  They actually got him back through DNA testing.

  8. There is a market for the meat, which has a low fat content and unique flavor, and for the hide. Deer antler is a prized item for things like knife handles, and carved items. Some species may be raised for re-population efforts in selected places by state or federal contract. They are also an attraction that will draw people to a farm or other outdoor like facility. They make great animal companions; very sensitive and intelligent.

  12. In most cases, they're bred to serve as night watch"men" for the owner's dwelling.  You'd be surprised how well they serve in this role.

  13. I didn't know people raised deer. I do know people who have tree and corn farms to attract deer for hunting.

  14. most raise deer for the felt on their new antlers for medicine purposes

  15. Food

  16. Deer are pretty hard to domesticate, so deer farms are more like zoos than farms. They are mostly fenced off pieces of land suitable for deer, where they are fed and protected from predators.

Deer are raised primarily for hunting. Farmers raise deer with prized characteristics -- well fed and with large racks of antlers. Hunters like to hunt them because they get something big to hang on the wall and better quality meat to eat.
