Why do people rank the Mavs as a low seed?

Question

I was recently looking at answers for Mavs' questions on yahoo answers, and I saw that people were ranking the Mavs as the 6th,7th,8th, or not even making the playoffs. My question is why? Everyone says they are going to be that way because they aren't making any major changes to their roster. Again why? We are one of three teams that have got 50 wins in the past 8 seasons. (The others being San Antonio and Detroit.) Through 2004-2008 of February we kept the starting 5 the same. That was one of the reasons of success. Since we kept the same roster the players knew how to play with each other and were the best at it at the time- that was one reason that we were led to a finals appearance and a 67 win season. The same success happened with Detroit and San Antonio. San Antonio-ever since duncan came-has never lost in the first round. Detroit-seven straight eastern conference finals appearances.

Then there's "no room for improvement" and such. That has to be the biggest load of BS I have ever heard. Brandon "Beastly" Bass??? Josh Howard?? Okay he may have been on dope- but he still plays great b-ball, and every year he's gotten better-including last year. Dirk Nowitzki is in his prime so don't even start talking. And Diop- plenty of ways he can get better... Don't believe me just look at their stats.

Then there's the Nuggets,Clippers, and Golden State Fans who think there gonna be better than the Mavs? Clipper fans-wtf? You lost Corey maggette and Elton Brand and got Baron Davis. Do the math 40 points from maggette and brand-20 points that you get from davis= 20 points that you still need. You guys are in a 20 point/8 rebound hole that your going to somehow have to fill. Golden State good luck fighting that 8 seed with Denver.

Look Avery Johnson put Jason Kidd in a shooting position as head coach-not his strong suit.. Thought some games it worked- most of the time it didn't. Rick said he's gonna let Jason Kidd run offense, so all you haters better expect something a lot better.

I don't want to hear S**tty answers, just give me one good reason why the mavs are not going to be good next year. If you have an actual decent answer support it.

They coked away the title 3 yrs ago .Then followed that up with tanking against the # 8 seed!Last yr they got beat easy by the Hornets.

Im a mavs fan  and honestly i dont know what to expect from this team. Ever since they got rid of Davin Harris, they are not the same. if u look at last season games, with Devin they beat the Cavs, Spurs, Lakers, Rockets(twice), New Orleans(in Dallas), Detroit, and i can go on and on....With Kidd, they lost to them all. I never agreed on the trade and i was somehow happy when Devean George held the trade. Now, we know that Dirk needs help...but out of the mavs roster, who is better than Dirk? yes, we got Josh, Jet, Bass, and newly acquired Green,but they havent signed someone at Dirk's level or better...Just look at the Celtics..it only took one season with Garnett, Allen and Pierce to get a ring..and the mavs big three??? is long gone. But trust me, Cuban wont let this team be a bottom feeder....let's just wait until season starts

the reason the mavs aren't really good as they used to be is because of the lakers. the lakers have all the missing pieces the mavs don't have at all. so do the hornets. chris paul is definetly better than kidd. derek fisher is even starting to play better at point guard then kidd and he's only 3 years younger! and they both have better SGS for sure. KOBE IS THE BEST PLAYER IN DA GAME!!!!! james posey is a great defender. the mavs don't really have anyone but Dirk to take over games. josh howard isn't as clutch. and LOOK AT KOBE BRYANT. he takes over any game. and you better remember derek fisher. he did a lot of crazy stuff in the last seconds. the 0.4. shot if you still remember...odom can make clutch shots as well. he rebounded the miss from kobe and put it back in with 2 seconds left. unfortunately the lakers lost that game eventually in OT but won the series in Utah. BUT ONE THING THE MAVS REALLY ARE MISSING IS A HIGH QUALITY SCORER IN A GUARD POSITION. THE LAKERS HAVE THAT CUZ OF KOBE! jason terry wouldn't stand a chnace against kobe.

The Mavs could barely beat one of those teams in a seven game series

They are older and have been on the decline. Ummmm, the Mavs were just as bad to be a #8 seed in the West so dont start talking about other teams. Hornests easily beat them. You think Diop can get better? Look at his offensive game, he has NONE. West is getting stronger and the Mavs havent done anything in the offseason to improve.

Dallas was a 7th seed last year - it shouldn't come as a surprise...and remember 8 teams won 50 games in the west.

Here are the teams that are definitely better than Dallas in the west - San Antonio, Utah, Lakers, Rockets, Hornets, and the Suns.

Here are teams comparable this year to the Mavericks - Nuggets, and Blazers.

So 7th seed sounds about right...now that doesn't mean you can't do slightly better but even when you guys were very good a couple of years ago, Golden State bounced you out of the playoffs in the first round.

I hope you can make a trade or develop someone that no one knows about yet...otherwise if you make the playoffs...it will be for one series.

jason kidd doesnt fit well in dallas, they finished 7th last season and the west just got tougher, the reasons why they chose those teams higher is because dallas is on the decline

They're ranking them lower because a lot of teams got better in the West. We're talking about teams like the Clippers, Suns, Houston, Portland (Probably miss the playoffs) and Hornets. The Spurs and Lakers will be at their usual spots and so will Utah. That's already 7 teams projected to be higher RANKED than the Mavs.

Also the Mavs haven't done much since adding Carlisle, and they did replace a young, rising guard with an older but more experienced one known as Jason Kidd. The Mavs will still make the playoffs, but there will always be better teams.

The mavs are mystery coming into this season. They have a new coach, and the addition is of Jason Kidd is fairly new. Same thing as the Suns, they could either be top of the west, or not make the playoffs. We'll have to wait and see.
