Question:

Why do people refuse to shut up about their political beliefs, even after you've told them to stop?

I don't care if you're a liberal, conservative, or a Vulcan. When I tell you that I'm not interested in discussing politics, I mean it. It is not a friendly suggestion. When I say stop, you need to stop.

Why do these types keep at you, with their rhetoric and other whiny beliefs? Do they honestly think that they have some new point-of-view that you haven't heard? Are they insecure, and babbling about politics makes them feel important?

  1. They are insecure. They are desperate for someone to validate their views.

  2. Pick new friends that only talk about what you want to hear.

  3. I would imagine that if you asked them to stop talking about politics, and they keep it up anyway; they are simply insensitive and rude people, and my guess is that this behavior is not specific to the subject of politics.

  4. I take it you fail to see the irony of posting your rant on Y/A politics.

  5. Either you're interested in the big picture, or you're not. Seems to me that that's what politic discussion is--expression of interest (or other strong feeling) about a world OUTSIDE of yours; which presumably is concerned merely with TV programs, beer, sport, girlfriends, overtime, etc. Your dog's cough. Tiny sphere.

  6. I once had a psychologist tell me, 'no one can tell you anything you don't already know,  because when you hear something you agree with, you are only validating what you already knew... and what is told to you that you don't know, you will not trust as fact, without first validating it for yourself.'

    I agree with that.

  7. It isn't limited to politics.  I don't know the answer to the question, but I do know it isn't just politics.

I've seen the same tendency of people to keep talking on a variety of subjects, even after I've indicated my preference for being roasted over an open fire to continuing the conversation.

Some of the topics have included sports, religion, art, wine, food, medical conditions (including toenail fungus or a colostomy), farm prices, automobiles, various conspiracy theories, and whatever product the individual happened to be selling.

    It's not just politics.

  8. They feel that if you arent rabidly supporting their candidate you are either misinformed or lacking understanding. In a sad way, they think they are helping you.

  9. Why?  I've got this theory that we can lump politics, automobile make preferences, religion, along with some other things probably, into a category of those things that we somehow need to defend to make legitimize ourselves.  So we defend our "positions" with arguments which may well involve ignoring bald-faced facts.  Humans have an amazing ability to defend positions with a good deal more fervor that facts warrant.

  10. Whyyyyyy are you in the Politics section??  If you question or comment on it, people will support, protect, and defend their views!
