I just came back from the Philippines after being 6 months there. I just have one curious question why do people in the Philippines drive there motorbikes in flip flops and in the states you hardly see people wear flip flops driving there motorbikes.

  1. I'm sure its the mild climate and the small area.

  2. people who ride motorcycles without the proper gear are just people who have never tasted pavement...

  3. Climate, culture, custom.  The Philipinnes is hot and muggy.  Sometimes naked isn't naked enough and still you have to stay dressed so you don't attract the gendarmie.  What to do?  Don't cover anything you don't have to.  Result: shoes that only protect your soles.

Culture: the Philipinnes isn't as heavily industrialized a nation, nor as economically resonant as most larger countries.  Its workforce is generally much more casual than, say, Australia's.  Dress codes aren't as stringent.

Custom: Filipinos have been wearing minimal footwear for an awfully long time.  Considering where they live, why would they start now?

Traffic speeds tend to be a lot slower in the Philippines, too - nothing is too terribly far from anything else on the islands.  In the US, where you might cover 60 miles just getting to work, you'll hit speeds where a flying beetle smacking into your toe is going to hurt - you're going to wear closed shoes for that reason if nothing else.

  4. u could've asked them ter only....

  5. i live in coco beach and as you know its warm  but  i dont get on a motorcycle  with open toe shoes

  6. They aren't in a country full of people that believe you can't take care of yourself. The difference is the slanted view people are taught or convinced to agree with. Just in my 32 years there have been things that where not illegal and no one thought it was odd to do and after laws made no one thinks it's safe or would even think of doing it. Seat belts for example, when not illegal driving without was normal. Today people believe danger is imminent without a belt. Over the years lots of commercials have run to convince people to wear seat belts and society now believes. Motorcycle helmets in my state are mandatory, people can't believe their eyes when in another state and they see someone without a helmet, it's what they've been made to believe. USA is full of people that think they know what's best for other people and once the Philippines has the same type people they will not be allowed to wear flip flops. Eventually their opinion would change with cohearsment and they won't dare ride without "proper gear".

  7. Flip flops appear to be the footwear of choice in the Philippines, for just about any activity. I'm not comfy riding my motorcycle in flip flops but I've seen some people (here in FL) that occasionally do. Most wear at least a sneaker though, if not an actual heavy-duty riding shoe.

  8. It is their culture the land of paradise.......
