Question:

Why do people rip on the WNBA?

Sure, it may be that it's not nearly as exciting as the NBA, but there are other things too. I've heard people complain that there are twice as many teams in the NBA -- the WNBA has only been around for 12 years! The NBA had even fewer teams at age 12, I believe. My point is, the WNBA will grow, just like the NBA did, you just gotta give it time. The WNBA, I'd say, is a LOT more advanced than the NBA was at the same age. You just can't compare the NBA of today with the WNBA.

  6. It's boring to watch women try to be as good as men in sports, think about it, percentage wise it just isnt gonna happen. Men will always be dominant in sports. Yes there are excellent woman in sports, some better than men at times, but as a whole men are built to be better, stronger, faster, and more physical in sports.

  7. Yeah.NBA at age 12 was at,errr 1892?How many cities were there at 1892?It's 2008 already.

  8. womens basketball is a joke honestly!!

  9. A lot of folks, especially men 18 to 35 don't like the WNBA because there is less flash in their game including the lack of dunks.  Also the pace of the WNBA game centers more around the half court sets than we see in the NBA, though teams like the Phoenix Mercury play a more free flow offense like the Suns.  Keep in mind also that the WNBA also rather recently (around '04) implemented new rules such as four 10 minute quarters, a 24 second shot clock, and the NBA size lane from its original rules which were almost like college, and this will throw everyone's game off a bit because they are adjusting to this faster paced game.  In the NBA, they haven't seen rule changes of the same magnitude, and the only newbies to the rules would be rookies.

Another reason why the WNBA gets hate is for its lack of sexually attractive players to the 18-35 male crowd and we've already named a good number of those like Sue Bird, Candace Parker, etc.  I've said it before, and no girls look that attractive when they're not in makeup and wearing knee length shorts and loose tanks.  But basketball is a contact sport, especially in the low post, and naturally, you'll need big and strong players there, so understandably, many of your bigger players may be butch, but if it helps the team, all the better.

Lastly, a large amount of fans in the WNBA are lesbians.  Most WNBA fans AREN'T lesbians, but a good amount are.  Because of this fanbase, as loyal and important it is to the league, it has shadowed the league's image to the fellas, especially the young men, like me, and some of us make the faulty assumption that "all WNBA players are a bunch of butch lesbians," and the coming out of Sheryl Swoopes, etc. certainly hasn't helped either.  Most of the hotter WNBA players we see also are single/don't have boyfriends or husbands as far as we know and the WNBA's distorted image will make some guys (and lesbians) wonder if Diana Taurasi and Sue Bird are L*****n partners, just because they played in college together, are playing in Russia together, not to mention they're on Team USA too.  In their defense, I would think it'll be kinda hard to find a boyfriend if they're working ALL YEAR LONG playing basketball without more than a couple weeks rest or so as opposed to NBA players who mostly just rest for a good three months at least after the season.   Anyway, most WNBA players aren't g*y, but we can't blindly assume that every NBA player is straight either, and it's only a matter of time until a significant active player says that he is a homo, and I wouldn't be surprised if he had kids either.

Personally I'm a 24 year old guy and like the WNBA, because I appreciate the women's game's advancement since I was in middle school when the league started, and the players' undying commitment to the sport and to their fans is truly great.  I say that confidently even though I still will avidly watch the NBA season when it starts.  But whether you like it or not, the WNBA is here to stay.  Because it has been here for 12 years and counting, most girls who play basketball today want to be the next Taurasi, Bird, or Parker rather than the next Kobe, CP3, or Lebron, when in the early 90's they had no visible female role models that they could see in the sport, and this I think has been the WNBA's biggest accomplishment.
