There are two reasons:

One is a myth that you can save tabs and use them to pay for kidney dialysis, that the dialysis centers would turn in tabs for the recycling money.  That myth has been disproven more than once but continues to pop-up.

A couple of organizations (McDonald's included) took advantage of this myth to start collections of pop tabs for publicity.

There was also a sort of 'urban currency' which involved saving the tabs.  A full tab (with the ring still attached) was called a "f**k-tab" and could be given to your boyfriend/girlfriend in exchange for s*x.  In some circles, this was also known as a kiss-tab, while in others kiss-tabs were tabs that did not have the inner circle section attached.

wow, I've never heard of this one. Are you talking about soda cans? I don't drink soda so maybe that's why I've never heard of this. I guess you could recycle it, but why not just recycle the whole can?

i think they do it as a collector type thing some people collects stamps and postcard but some people collect tabs of aluminum cans it make me wonder how much soda do these peole drink. but i guess they think it is cool

I know in Canada you can turn them in and they help buy wheel chairs for ppl that need them. Not sure about the USA or any other place.

In my city, everyone saves them and donates them to the hospital.  After a certain amount, they donate a wheelchair to someone who can't afford one.

Childrens Hospital use to collect them and use them as a donation to get money for their hospital programs.  There are other places that do the same thing.  When i was a senior in highschool there was a girl that had cancer and she got the school involved in collecting them for donation and the school had a competition and whoever collected the most won a free large pizza hut pizza.  I think that the person that won ended up with 100,000 or something like that.
