  1. I see what you mean and I do agree, but I think Education encompass more than money. It's true that if you took money out, nobody would go to college, but an education will make you a better person overall, from socializing, learning about the world, being independent and responsible, building your character, etc. For me, college has done very little for me financially because I need certifications, not really a degree, but the benefits of going to college is priceless.

  2. Education is the key to other things that help us be happy.

It will help you get a good job which will let you have a decent lifestyle

My mom is a waitress and my dad is a truck driver.  Both are only high school graduates.  We live almost paycheck to paycheck.  No savigs.  I have had to lend my parents 4000 dollars from my extra scholarship money to help them pay bills.  When I was little, my parents couldnt afford to keep the water on and the electricity on.  I didnt have a bed and wore dirty clothes to school. They also fought all the time over money and it nearly broke up their marriage.  When I was 10 my parents were arrested and charged with neglect and me and my sisters had to live with a family friend for a few months.

Had my parents gone to college they both would have made a million dollars more in their lifetime.  Maybe we wouldnt have suffered so much......

  3. Yes but if you want to make money, which most people do, then education is the best way to get it. Plus with an education you are less likely to be involved with crimes and stuff

  4. There is a rare breed of total nerds who really like learning, believe it or not. They tend to become academics and spend their whole lives at schools, teaching and learning. University professors often don't make that much money, let alone other teachers in high school, etc. But does the kind of person who would become a high school physics teacher instead of using his brain to make real money love learning and education more than money? You bet.

  5. The average person with a college degree will make a million dollars more over the course of their working life than one without.  Why?  Because they understand how the world works a little better.  They may want the money, but they get the education, which leads to the money.  I have six college degrees ( AA, BS-double major, MS, PhD, MS, MA).  I've written five books (almost done with the sixth) and I'm a retired multi-millionaire who's been married to the same woman for thirty-six years.  I'm going to Italy next month.  What are you doing with your life?

  6. I'm a current university student majoring in computer science. Probably 90%+ of other CS students do it just for the money, but I've always believed in learning for its own sake. Knowledge can have intrinsic value of its own - whether it's to learn about how a component of society works, or how the natural world works, or in the case of math or philosophy, how reality outside of the physical world works. As parts of computer science is a fundamentally mathematical subject, it too exists outside of the physical world. It's hard to explain to non-CS people but even if computers were never invented, many of the ideas of computer science is still meaningful.

When you're saying that making money is the most important thing in life, you're placing your life's meaning on a social construct - how to mold yourself into someone who serves society well. But learning for its sake means living your life for itself. Money can always be taken away from you, say if a country invades, gets rid of the capitalist system and strips you of your job - but even though it won't feed you, you still have a set of intrinsic knowledge in your mind.

  7. good point

  8. Nothing in life is more important than life itself.

And that, too, not much because the day it becomes important, it becomes a bag of worries too!

Live it free... don't give it much importance.

And you are very right, people just want education for money and for nothing else, whatever big slogans they might keep mongering!

Also, it struck me late for Jessica...

What, Jessica, in that case if your father/mother were educated; someone would still have to be that truck driver that your father is now.

What about his woes and his daughter's?

Shouldn't we be searching for some better solutions to problems like that of yours?

  9. Well, isn't money important? With the state of the economy the way it is, I would want to make as much money as possible.

  10. *Not true for me.. I consider an education an amazing privilege.

  11. I go to school to get an education and to make money. Mostly for education. But people say that cuz thats why u r supposed to want to go to school is for the ed.
