  1. because everybody thinks home study is easier than high school so it might look like you couldn't with high school so you just decided to home study... which is not necesarily easier but a lot more comfortable...

  2. When people don't know the whole truth about something, they tend to make up stuff, especially bad stuff.  I homeschool my kids.  According to certain elements, we're freaks, hillbillies, right-wing nutballs, fundamental cultists, antisocial misfits, irresponsible miscreants, anti-establishment rebels and uneducated idiots.  None of that explains how my kids are several grade levels ahead, constantly in the company of other children, well spoken, articulate, voracious readers, community volunteers, confident, athletic, creative, safe, secure and HAPPY.  So there you go.  You can't worry too much about what people say.  When they don't know for sure, they just stereotypically regurgitate whatever everybody else says.

  3. Because you're not in high school anymore, right?

You dropped out, that's what it means. If you don't like that term, then just say you withdrew from public school.

  4. They're just giving you a hard time, ignore it. You're getting a way better education now.

  5. because they are uneducated about the home study process

  6. Unfortunately the school system is flawed (yet again!) in that way.

Statistics say my stepdaughter dropped out, when in fact we removed her because she was not thriving in that environment. She finished homeschooling high school and started college early :)

Statistics also say kids who have been expelled drop out.

You would think there would be a greater selection of boxes for them to check on their forms.

I guess the bottom line is they only get state and federal funding if YOUR BOTTOM is in that chair each day! So they don't care about why.

  7. They're envious that you have not bogged down your life with the petty ravings that many public school kids do. It doesn't matter what you do, if you don't do as they want you to do they treat you horribly. They'll always find an excuse to give you c**p as long as you are not sheep like they are.

It's just another form of segregation.

  8. because their jealos of you!

  9. Because many people don't understand that you can still get an education--credits and all--at home. I know one homeschooled girl who gets that comment--about having droppped out--every time she sees certain family members. They simply can not grasp the idea that she has not dropped out. ("Dropped out" has the societal meaning of completely quitting your education, for those who seem to think it just means you've left school.) They think she will not get a diploma or go onto college or anything. Really, they just can't fathom how somebody could get an education without being in school!

  10. There are plenty of people who "drop out" of school.  They get minimum wage jobs if they're lucky, or spend their time watching tv or hanging out with people who aren't doing anything useful with their lives.

Obviously that isn't what you're doing.  You have the choice of explaining this to people who may or may not understand, or just ignoring them.  Whichever you feel like doing.

There are people who are nosy and want to tell you what to do with your life, and it doesn't end when you graduate, it's especially bad when you have children.  One of the worst places is standing in line at the grocery store.  There are people who will tell you you're buying the wrong toothpaste, or wearing the wrong shoes or that you should or shouldn't use credit cards.

I think they intend to be helpful, sort of, but basically they are kind of dumb.  You know your situation and the reasons why you do what you do.  I try to be polite, but remember that I'm there to buy soap, not to get on a soapbox!

  11. Because ...they don't understand that you can be taught from home. My kids are homeschooled and people have things to say about it all the time. Homeschooling is a hot debate topic. I have just learned to ignore them. If homeschooling is what is best for you than that is all that matters.

  12. Because they are stupid.  You will learn the world is full of ignorance.  Most of the time its easier just to ignore it.

  13. Because they don't see you at school so they think you dropped out.

But anyway!  Don't worry about it because this time of your life will be behind you before you know it and nobody will remember if you dropped out, when to reform school or learned at home.

  14. They say that you 'dropped out' because you did, regardless of what you're doing now, you still left the school, didn't you?

You're probably receiving a better education than most of them though, so dont worry about it.
