  1. it is french for "m'aider" which means "help me". You say mayday whenever you are in disstres, not just a crash. When using the word mayday it indicates you need absolute radio silence on the frequency in use to recieve special attention.  Therefore any transmission you make should begin with the words mayday three times.

  2. Since all airplane crashes occur in May

  3. IS A NEIL OF HTE PILOTS THAT MEANS HELP!!!!

  4. From the French Aidé moi .

    M'Aidé = Help me

  5. Its from the French m'aidez - help me.

  6. It is a common term easily identifiable and can not mean anything else .Like the sea going S.O.S. save our survivors and not souls or ship like many believe. You can't save a sinking ship.

  7. Whenever a plane is in trouble due to any mechanical failure

    pilot contacts the tower and mayday is like code to tell  his

    plane is in trouble.

    Like we dial 911 for emergency pilot calls mayday.

  8. It means ' help ' in flying speak! If the air traffic controllers hear MAYDAY, then they know that that plane is in real trouble and will concentrate all their time to helping that plane get down or will assemble fire-fighters wherever its going to land. If they hear that call-sign and disappear from radar they'll know where they've disappeared from because they'll have been watching it.

  9. They needed a word that cannot be confused with another one, so they picked up this one, which is more or less a phonetic transcription of the French locution "m'aider" (help me).

    For the record, the code word for non-panic emergency situation is "pan" (repeated 3 times, like mayday), again a phonetic transcription of French "panne" (failure).

  10. It comes from the french phrase 'm'aider' meaning 'Help Me'.

  11. Have you ever noticed that it is always French that these things are based on?

    Right!

    well however it is based, and I have my own view, it is as stated an Emergency call, just as SOS is in Morse ( try claiming that Frog) and  the next level down is a PAN call. Actually when you are IN a crash you usually just scream or groan, its BEFORE the crash you call mayday.

    That wakes the pilot up and gives the Nav the chance to form up his excuses

  12. Most people  say " ARRRGGGHHH or MUMMY when a plane crashes!!!
