  1. 1) It's hard to cut papers to fit the bottom

    2) It's hard to find/make seed catchers for them

    3) They usually have domed tops, which birds can't climb on top of (I can't tell you why so many rectangular cages have arched tops, either)

    4) It doesn't have as much room inside it for the amount of floor space it occupies

    5) Most round cages are too small and they tend to be tall rather than wide (not as useful for birds)

But if you've got the room and don't mind some extra work and get a big enough cage, there's nothing wrong with them.  We've got a couple quarter-round cages.  They have flat tops and fit nicely in corners.  Their flat sides are 24", but they only have as much interior space as a 21" square cage.

  2. Mainly because they're very narrow compared to how tall they are. A bird needs more side-to-side room for flying and jumping -- they DON'T fly up and down that much and a round cage offers almost NO room to exercise.

A round cage also has a lot less space for a variety of perches and toys.

  3. Birds feel safer when they have corners they can be in, and a flat side that can go against a wall.  Plus a round cage would probably be too small for a bird to live in anyway (they can be tall, but birds need width).
