Why do people say "I was so humbled" when people heap praises on them?

You'd think they'd be the opposite of humbled. So what is it about complimenting someone that it would "Humble" them?

People want to make sure that nobody regards them as a conceited Jerk.

I never want to be rewarded in front of others, I am uncomfortable not being equal to my peers.

Also being a braggart is bad - being humble means good self image. Show offs get theirs in the end.
