why is it that when ever people are talking about vegans they know, they're like, "he/she doesn't *even* eat honey!" he doesn't "even" eat honey? what does that mean? vegans don't generally eat foods that are STOLEN. food companies can't just enter your house and take your hard earned meals to sell... and also honey is not healthy. so why are some people so surprised about this?

  1. People say 'even' because vegans won't eat anything slightly related to an animal, so they won't even eat honey

  2. well, I think it is a surprise for some people that the ethos goes to that extreme.  Do the ants ask permission to come in my house and eat my food?  Do the bees ask permission to eat the pollen from the flowers I plant in my yard?  Do any of the animals that eat from my yard ask permission?  In your terms, these animals all steal it.

Why do we need to ask their permission when they do not ask ours?  The only answer I can think of, is that humans who feel this is necessary believe they are superior to all other animals and can make superior moral decisions that animals cannot.

I reject that elitist and self-centered view of the world.  I garden and I know the insects and I battle over who gets the results of my work.

  3. Most likely because some people don't think bees or other insects are "animals", so when you say you don't eat any animals they don't include honey from bees in their thought process.

I could never really figure out why people like honey so much. It is an inefficient way to sweeten food or drinks because you'd have to put so much in there and it's messy. It's also not healthy, in fact, it's more fattening than sugar itself. There's a good reason doctors advise people not to feed infants honey, honey contains clostridium botulinum spores. Now, an adult might be able to handle that if they have a strong immune system, but babies can't.

  4. I'd say because they don't consider insects as animals.

  5. First off, the comment about it not being healthy is very offbase....it raises antioxidant levels, is a natural antiseptic can improve allergies if taken from local honey and is a more effective cough remedy than cough syrup for children. Like the other posters said, most people do not consider bees as animals and like most other byproducts, it is more beneficial for the husbandrist to take care of his animals than to neglect them so most bees aren't going to be abused.

  6. Wow, touchy much?

Actually honey is healthy. It's very high in sugar, so you can't eat it constantly, but otherwise it's fine.

Bees produce honey regardless, and the bees are not hurt or tortured or killed for it. So why even a Vegan would object to honey is beyond me. But if they don't want it, they don't have to eat it.

  7. because they do eat it and think nothing of it so someone who doesn't is strange and bizarre.

read Frankenstein, it will clear some things up, just change the monster into a vegetarian/vegan, the movie works better (the one where the villagers chase him into the windmill)

I agree with jautomatic, but again as he states it is a "moral decisions" it doesn't mean the person feels superior to ants and bees, it just means they decided, "No, i don't want to haz cheezburger" (quoted from the vegan lolzcat) somepeople do to fell beter then other people, but some people just say no.

also those who feel the need to be superior to insects, well they must feel pretty small.
