Well, if they have nothing else to say, and they hate awkward silence, then whatever comes to mind is likely to be the first thing outta their mouth. They definetly don't intend on annoying anybody! They are just saying it to keep the conversation moving. Don't get frustrated :)

People say random things because they are things that randomly come to mind. Or to make people laugh, and cheer people up. Or because they hate awkward silence.

People are so busy these days with so much on their minds I think that sometimes they just don't realize what they are saying or the effect that it may have on another. I like you sometimes get very angry but I just try to ignore it and mark it up to their ignorance.
