Why do people say they play AFL? No they don't, they play Aussie Rules Footy!?

Umm, australian teenager, are you being sarcastic or serious saying 'AFL' stands for Australian Rules Football because that wouldnt work out. AFL(Australian Football League) is the league. Australian Rules Football is the actual sport which we play.

Modern marketing.  

I have noticed the term dying off in the last 10-15 years.  People that play local comps in the ACT call it AFL, not Australian Rules or the generic term of footy.  The competition is called AFL Canberra.

It also distinguishes between the various football codes.  It's all footy, but people call them Union (Rugby Union) League (Rugby League, Soccer (Football) & AFL (Australian Rules)  There is also a small American Football competition in the ACT and it is called Gridiron.

If somebody says Aussie Rules to my nephew, who is 14, he wouldn't have a clue.  He tells me that he has friends who play AFL.

Just a modern term for it.

It is just confusion on the part of some SANFL,AFL,VFL and yes we play Australian Rules Football.

If you have more than one son or daughter have you ever called them by each others names? Same thing.

AFL is the term used to promote the main competition in the media etc. - the Australian Football League. There are competitions all over Australia whihc substitute their jurisdiction for Australia.

The game is called Australian Rules.
