Thousands of farmers die every year growing cotton and the pesticides poison our planet and are still present on th eclothes we buy. Cotton growing also uses huge amounts of water, as much as 10 tons to grow 1lb of cotton

  1. Because its a natural resource

  2. A lot of people think cotton is 'green' because it is a plant, and therefore not made from synthetic, petro-chemical materials.  There ARE  versions of truly green cotton that do not use pesticides or chemical fertilizers.  This variety of cotton is called organic cotton.  There is also a variation called transitional cotton that is cotton that is grown in a field formerly using pesticides and chemical fertilizers, but is transitioning to all natural, organic treatments.   Plants do take water, but they also transpire moisture and contribute oxygen to our atmosphere, so the the water trade-off is not as big as you might think.  Without plant life, none of us could live!!  However, I do agree that if you live in a place without adequate rainfall, using aquifer water to grow cotton crops would not be the best choice!

  3. Cotton is not green - organic cotton is.

    Your position is right.

Cotton is about 3% of global agriculture, but contributes over 10% of the pesticides and herbacides that go into the water stream.
