Why do people speak English in Indian Idol?

the judges, contestants, MC, etc. they all speak a lot of English, of course they speak some hindi in between too, and they sing hindi songs

do most Indian speak and understand English well? otherwise those sitting in front of the tv will be wondering what the guys are talking about?

People from different regions of India speak different languages and English is the only language which can be understood by educated people from all parts of India.  That is the reason why people speak in English in Indian Idol as people from all parts of India particiipate in that programme and also watch the same on TV
