I got asked this question but I can think of 2 things.

1) there stressed so they want to go somewhere to get away from it or

2) They need a change in their life so they escape, which can kinda relate to stress.

Can you think of anything else??

  1. OLD SAYING!  Fool and there money are soon parted  The Best Time I've had did not cost nothing but time!

  2. Vacations are about living in luxaries and being served a bit instead of being the server. Or it can be fun for and with the kids or maybe just away from the kids a while. There are many reasons. Getaways are getaways from the stressful norm. Adventures are about going and seeing things you never saw.

    As far as money...

People on vacation want convenience and do not want to stand in lines or investigate other options... so they spend what ever the price is for saving a little time and stress.

-People don't have their kitchens on vacation with them either, so they dine out a lot at restaurants where most of time they stand in line forever and when they are seated and might see that the menus are overpriced fried food, they ARE NOT leaving to go stand in line somewhere else.

-Everyone needs a souvenir! don't understand it but for some reason people need souvenirs for uncles and cousins.

-Sometimes people on vacation, mostly kids, get bored and decide to go parasailing and dolphin touring and such.

  3. Anacowboy is right...many people like to get away from their dull and boring lives by spending money on going to tourist destinations, especially the Caribbean and Florida.  It's pure escapism.  My husband and I purchased a cottage in the lake region years ago and we prefer to spend quiet time there and enjoy the lake, canoeing, swimming and relaxing in nature.

If we do travel, it is usually for cultural enrichment.  There's a big difference between attending a music festival in Italy and spending a small fortune to lay on a beach drinking fruity cocktails with umbrellas and buying cheap souvenirs.  Just my opinion though.  Whatever rings your bells, as they say.
