  1. there is a grain of truth in all stereotypes, though exaggerated.

  2. for their own securities and to make themselves feel better. Look up Carl Jung's concept of the shadow. It is a very reasonable explanation to me

The Shadow, is a psychological term introduced by the late Swiss psychiatrist, Dr. Carl G. Jung. It is everything in us that is unconscious, repressed, undeveloped and denied. These are dark rejected aspects of our being as well as light, so there is positive undeveloped potential in the Shadow that we don’t know about because anything that is unconscious, we don’t know about

Projection is an unconscious psychological mechanism. We all project onto other people parts of ourselves that we disown, that we deny. We will usually not identify with the projected quality or characteristic at all. It’s them. It’s not us.

We will feel highly uncomfortable when we are around someone that is carrying a part of our Shadow. As I said before, and it bears repeating, there will often be a repulsive element to it. We will be repulsed by that person and whatever they stand for. It will feel like whoever they are is totally against our principles, moral values and ideals and we will be highly critical of their actions or way of being in the world.

So notice. Notice who comes into your life that irritates you or pushes your buttons. It’s usually something that is so unconscious within yourself, that it’s impossible to see that it’s about yourself. If it indeed is a part of your own Shadow, in time you are going to see how it’s going to start repeating in patterns.

Whatever we deem too negative to express, whatever goes against our highest ideals will be conveniently projected out into the world. Our energy is like a magnet and the unconscious is profound. It will draw to itself, itself over and over again. And generally the person receiving the projection is what analysts call ‘a good hook’ for the projection. They will be acting out that quality or characteristic themselves and usually they will be doing it to an extreme so it is easy to see that it is them doing it. But as the 12-steppers say, “if you spot it, you got it.”

  3. because the people who do it suck. they probably either get it from other people or from media when they have idiocy enough to believe it.

  4. the act of stereotyping is based on limited information and exposure to certain groups. Everything boils down to being a cognitive economy. We process information based on what we have experienced even things we have not necessarily experienced. We see things that are not there if we are looking for them. Stereotyping saves time - by forming categories, in order to help make sense of things around us. There are a few characteristics associated with having a stereotypical personality: a) punative attitude    b) intolerance of weakness    c) authoritarian personality   d) submussiveness to authority...

  5. Because there are so many people who think and only worry about how somone looks, and not what or who they are inside. That may sound corney but its the truth. Also, it is just easier to do then get to know that person, just to think of what you have always heard about them. A while ago i watched Pocahontas and The hunch back of notra dame. They are really amazing movies if you think about it. The stereotype for indians were they were savages, and not human. The hunchback was 'supposadly' weird and diseased.

It may be our way of protecting ourselves but it is stupid and can hurt more then help anything.

I personaly am not a racial person, and never have been. I am currently in a relationship with an african american boy. My mom doesn't quite agree with it. She is a school teacher and has dealt with rough kids before.

I find it a sad thing today that we have these stereotypes. Most have just come from the 1 bad kid out of the 100s. and whatever they did sticks.

  6. i think its because they feel bad for themselves

and they make other people feel bad so they can feel better about themselves!

  7. I think it is human nature to pick out what is different in someone else, so that one may feel superior.  I'm not justifying stereotypical attitudes towards others; but, I am explaining why I believe this exists.  The only real way to break stereotypes of a certain race is to educate people.  The more educated a individual happens to be, the more cultural tolerance they poses.

  8. Because on the outside (skin color, body characteristics) we are so easy to categorize and push into groups.  But even more important than skin color are the mannerisms and behavior we exude.  They are so strikingly different that it is little wonder we tend to mock other peoples' traits.

  9. As wrong as we are led to believe stereotypes are, they are born out of truth. I'm not saying everyone fits into a neat little box but you can't deny for example that "we" like chicken. LOL. It's only natural for humans to judge books by their cover. It doesn't make you a bad person unless you treat people different according to pre-judgements.

  10. Its not just peoples nationalities.  In school the "Nerds" are teased and avoided and the "goths" sit in a corner of the hall by themselves.  Its human nature to stick with other people who are similar and when someone who is different comes alone it just makes everything new and awkward.  Sometimes its just hard to accept something new after its been done one way for SO long.  Everyone is entittled to their own oppinion and thats all it is, we cant be hurt over someone elses oppinion.

Sticks and Stones will break my bones but words will never hurt me
