  1. Maybe it's noisy on the subway/bus or wherever they are. Or maybe their volume is turned down low. I tend to shout when I can't hear someone to well..... it's a fault that I'm guilty of, yes ;)

  2. Because they are stupid, they think the person whom they talking to, cannot hear them when in public transport, in fact the person who is on the public transport cannot hear his/her own voice hence speaks louder to make sure he hears himself, while exploding the other person's ear on the other side!!

  3. That kinda annoys me too, when you have people behind you on the bus practically shouting into their phones.

  4. People who talk on their cell phones in public tend to forget that they are in public -- we get a pretty good idea of what they are like privately.  Seems these people are oblivious to their surroundings.  That's why it is really scary to realize that when they talk on their cell phones while driving, they are also oblivious to their surroundings.

I used to think they were just being ostentatious, but have come to realize that this is not always the case.

  5. it annoys me so much when that happens to! but its not there fault if they do it on subways or buses cause the connection there awful!!

  6. Because their input volume is pretty low and broken, so they over compensate...

  7. Maybe they talk loudly anyway.

    Maybe they have trouble hearing.

    Maybe the signal is bad.

Don't get me wrong, it annoys me ... but you shouldn't assume they're just being uncouth.

  8. Simply because the  line is not good. After a couple of attempts to make the person on the other side of the line here with no luck the resort to shouting.

  9. Because they mistakenly think that if they shout the person on the other end will hear them better.  It is rude, of course, to be yelling into a phone in a public setting.  The whole world is not interested in the private goings on in people's lives, but many cell phone users don't have the brains enough to figure this out.  I've heard everything from what people had for dinner last night to what a hot time they had in the sack with the latest hottie (sometimes with explicit details) - and all at top volume.  Like I need to know this c**p?

  10. Society has taken something that normally we would do in the privacy of our home or our office literally onto the street.  Some have become so ego-centric that they either talk loudly so everyone will hear their conversation or because they are oblivious to other's around them. Then there are the times that you honestly just can't hear the other person and so for some reason you talk louder into the phone.

  11. Because they're inconsiderate.

I can't understand it! I hate drawing attention to myself on the phone - I even get embarassed if my ringtone goes off really loudly on public transport, let alone talk loudly!!

  12. I think it is very bad mannered.  I have no problem with someone on a train ringing home to say they will be home in 10 mins etc.  I object to those using public transport as their private office!  I've even heard one mobile phone user telling a couple to stop talking as he was taking a business call!  Bloody cheek!!

  13. Some people have hearing problems and that makes them speak louder than they realize. This can be a big problem in a noisy environment. As the person with the hearing problem can barely hear with a lot of noise around them or even if there is background noise on the phone.

Please don't assume they are being rude they may not be able to help it.

  14. I swear, some people just love attention and want everyone to hear what they have to say. Or, they don't realize they are talking as loud as they are. And some people just don't care!!!

  15. there deaf ?

  16. Because they are speaking to someone a long way away!

  17. Obviously, because they are VERY IMPORTANT PEOPLE and we all have to know that.

In one of John Lanchester's novels, he goes on the tube with a dummy mobile phone and he shouts things like 'What do you mean?  Am I f*****g Janet?'  'I'M the spoilt one - what do you think YOU are?'  And so on.  He gets the lines just right.

  18. bad reception, too much background noise or they just deliberately want people to hear what they are talking about- showing off you know
