People will tease you and other people about some crazy things. Do they ever think "Am I really making fun of this person's socks?"

  1. Because the people they tease allow it.

If the things are "ridiculous," why do the people being teased allow it to bother them?

Perhaps the people being teased don't really think the things about which they're being teased are really all that "ridiculous" or "trivial." And maybe that's why the people doing the teasing pick those things to tease about.

In reality, nothing is all that important. People look they do because of an accident of birth. People act the way they do because of a lot of reasons over which they have no control. People dress the way they do because they like it.

If somebody tries to look different, act different, or dress differently from what he or she normally does just to impress others, that means whatever differences they employ are important to them. People who tease others will pick up on that.

If you can be comfortable with yourself, you don't care what others say or think.

Me, I'm too happy being me to worry about picking on  others or what they think about me.

  2. Because a lot of people are mean-spirited and teasing other people is often a source of humor.

  3. It's a sort of a faux combat thing that people in groups do, to establish a pecking order. All social animals in groups organize themselves into hierarchies of or more or less dominant individuals.

It's sometimes called a pecking order because chickens do it too, and that's what they call it.

Chickens don't make fun of each other's socks though.  In this respect they are superior to human beings.
