Why do people think BMW stands for???

British Motor Works... if the car is German and its Bavarian Motor Works... I just want to know where is the reasoning of saying British Motor Works is it because people are uninformed or they guess or what is the deal...

BMW stands for BAYERISCHE MOTOREN WERKE which is normally written BMW AG (Aktiengesellschaft) referring to the company, and in English should be translated as BAVARIAN MOTOR WORKS, Inc.
