Question:

Why do people think Democrats = g*y rights?

Let me clarify. I realize that conservatives are often Christian with family beliefs such as defining marriage strictly between a man and a woman.

However, Mitt Romney was Governor of Massachusetts when g*y marriage was legalized there. He's a Republican.

California's governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger, and President Bush are both Republicans, yet g*y marriage was just legalized there.

If McCain is elected, I don't think he'll attempt to redefine the Constitution regarding marriage. If Obama is elected, I don't think he'll take steps to legalize civil unions or g*y marriage. I think both will leave the matter to the states and it'll be a steady climb over the next half century.

What do you think?

(And yes, I'm g*y, so this is coming from a sensitive person's point of view towards the matter.)

  1. You answered your own question: they will do very little when they get in office. I agree with what you say because the democrats have made no effort to end the g*y oppression.

It is a coincidence that all states that have legalized it have republican leaders, I never thought of that.

The problem is that you can not put a civil rights issue on a ballot box. We are supposed to have a constitutional republic where everyone is treated the same regardless. It is our federal governments job to protect our civil liberties and ensure they do not get taken away or denied by the states. The states are supposed to deal with local issues unrelated to civil rights.

People should not be allowed to vote to oppress anyone, if we lived in that type of direct democracy than we would still have slavery and the oppression of woman. People just should not be allowed to take rights away from another person just because they do not agree with them...this is a very anti-freedom and anti-American thing that is happening to g**s and in a myriad of other issues. It is unconstitutional also.

For your issue I think it would be nice if they just called every legally recognized union a civil union and stopped using the term marriage all together when it comes to the government. Then they say that every *human being* will be legaly reconized if they choose to have a union.

We are a secular country, no need for the government to use the term marriage.

  2. As the topic creator already pointed out, this is one of those issues that both parties beat their chests over and then do nothing about.  g*y political issues will be decided by the courts and the evolution of society.

  3. Because Republicans = g*y Crimes.

Are you ashamed to be pro g*y rights?

I would be ashamed to be closed minded enough to not think that other people deserve the same things as I would even if they are different.  If you think differently i think you would do better maybe to live in another country.  There are a lot of things that people do that I necessarily do not approve of.  But I know I don't have the right to ask for legislation to make sure that those people go to prison or get a fine for being themselves so they aren't around me or I don't see it.  I just teach my kids my way.  Their house is their house and you share the same friggin planet.  Seriously though people have nothing better to do than to ask for laws saying that other people should act this way or that...?  I don't even get where the whole idea, let's make it a law comes from.  Oh yeah that's right RELIGION.  I believe there is something here called seperation of church and state.  Though the religious freaks (g*y bashers) forget that.  Plus, judge not lest he be judged themselves.

  4. Yes, g*y marriage is very important no matter what side you are on, but you also have to consider that a g*y rights decision isn't just decided by a governor or president. There is Congress, and the state's legal processes that have a say as well. You also have to take into consideration the fact that just because the typical Republican is against g*y rights and the typical dem is for them, not everyone fits the mold.

  5. America is so conservative, that is the trouble. We have civil unions here in England, but they are about half the level of when they were introduced, although that was raised by a backlog of people wanting to get married. With the religeous right so strong in America, I think you've got a long hard road ahead. Good luck anyway.

  6. Because people don't pay attention to the power distribution in their governments.  I say plural, because state is different than federal.  What president do you know that has created a law?  Answer is none.  They can suggest and guide Congress (House and Senate), but Congress is the one that creates them.  The president is a check and balance that has the power to veto it, but a super majority can override that.

By the way, you are on the right path.  State's Rights is where it should be.  That is what the civil war was over, one of the issues were slavery, but the state's right to decide was at stake.

This is just my opinion, and it may not be liked.

Democrats tend to create and enact more laws in support of g*y Rights.  Republicans try to limit the laws and allow the individual their rights as they are currently, not extra privileges.  I don't believe marriage was intended to be between individuals of the same s*x.  On a civil level, that is entirely different and is more of a financial state rather than a basis for a family.  I will say that they have the freedom and right to live that lifestyle if they so choose.  The only time I am offended by it is when some feel they have to force my acceptance of it on a greater level.

Another example would be the Affirmative Action, which expects certain percentages of race to be distributed in employment, schools, etc.  Some argue this is discriminatory.  I agree, you should get a job or acceptance in a school on your merits regardless of race.  It now does more to promote racism than prevent it.
