Why do people think hummers are so bad for the environment?

Ok, my family has two hummers. They are both H3s but most people think they are very bad for the environment but really they aren't. They are really 18 MPG. My step dad had a silverado and it was a lot worse. I do not understand why they choose to pick on the hummers. They aren't that big either so I really don't get what the big deal is.

The next time someone gets in your face about driving a Hummer, ask them why they don't have any solar panels on their roof.

They will usually shut up right then and there, but if perchance they respond "solar panels are too expensive right now" then snap right back at them "thats what we decided about replacing the batteries on our old Prius, so we bought Hummers"

Also, you are simply wrong in your last edit.  No, scientists are not in agreement on global warming, but only the insane ones argue that global warming isn't happening here and now, because it is.

Hummers are just one of the symbols of the greed and wasteful lifestyle that "Greenies" feel has put us in the terrible environmental position we are in. Just like large homes, large cars, limos, private planes, etc.

Why do you need a Hummer are you planning on going to war or something?  I don't understand why anyone needs one except our military to keep them safer (hopefully) The metal is so thick and if you were to hit someone with one on the freeway or whatever they have little chance of survival.  We all need to think smaller.  Melt those hummers down and make 5 or 6 little cars.

It is actually true that many trucks on the road get worse mileage than a hummer. I have driven a lot of 18 wheelers that get worse economy.

It is not useful to go about comparing your personal conveyance vehicle with trucks, not because you can not find something worse, but because you have failed to compare what you are doing with best of breed... what is really possible.

We also hate and despise, even loath anyone who by their choice of vehicle appear to be threatening our lives even to protect themselves. We do not react that way to someone who is transporting our food in an 18 wheeler, or driving a greyhound bus. It is when the person goes out of their way to buy a vehicle designed to intimidate.

We know that Silverado owners are also scum of the earth when they buy one for the same reason, but we are not able to tell always that the vehicle might be needed for hauling goods.

That lets their owners esacape public wrath a bit.

Do you know what global warming is?  It is where CO2 acts like a mirror that only reflects one way and keeps heat from the sun pent up on the surface of the Earth that shouldn't be there.  This causes ice caps to melt which raises ocean levels, destroys habitats, and a whole bunch of other negative things.  While all gasoline run cars spew out CO2, your Hummers are spewing out about the same amount of carbon every 18 miles, that my car spews out about every 55 miles.  That means that Hummers are putting 3 times as much carbon dioxide (CO2) that my car (a minivan) does.  A minivan transports even more people than a Hummer yet uses 3 times less gas.  This is why people pick on Hummers, because they  ARE bad for the environment.  Also Silverados are uses to transport stuff so people don't pick on them as much.  No matter what other people say global warming is real, do not believe people who don't want to believe so they don't have to get off their lazy asses and do something about it.

people pick on a hummer because it is more a status symbol than anything else. i would think jealousy.  as for me, i would kill to have a huge honking diesel pickup truck.  i could take my kids offroading, camping and haul stuff for my friends.

really, i'm not sure why folks  hate  hummers. i think it may be  like  getting a really huge stunning diamond  ring and waving it around people who are starving.  seriously..there are those who have nothing and  don't take into account the fact that some folks worked hard to get what they have.  

if i were going to OWN a hummer? i would most  likely buy a kit  and build it myself, it would be  just like a millitary hummer. rather than the commercial  ones.

Hummers use A LOT of fuel and that isn't a "pick on" issue that is a fact. Our car gets almost 50 MPG.

Hummers and other SUVs (stupid ugly vehicles) are a status symbol...

But when did waste greed and stupidity become a status symbol in America?

I laugh every time a see a Caddy  SUV or Pick-up... the owner paid big bucks extra for the wood steering wheel and special paint, and of course that big hood ornament to follow around. I have a bridge I would like them to consider for purchase as well, HO HO HO

Where I live in Colorado, the Texans and Californians come up here with their Fancy asphalt four-wheelers, take em in the back country and get stuck up to their axles... they don't know how to use them, and most, including Bummers are not rated for off road use anyway, poseurs!!! Great entertainment and income for us locals.  HE HE HE

Seriously though, it's all about getting from point A to point B.

Anyone who can't see the massive amounts of extra natural resources used to make and then maintain a thing like a Bummer probably couldn't read and understand simple instructions to find your butt with both hands... how sad.

Hummers are so bad because they are gas guzzlers! They release carbon monoxide which is a greenhouse gas, which contributes to global warming. And yes, i do know that practically all cars release this gas, but hummers release a lot more of it!

They get terrible gas mileage. 18 mpg is really bad. Another thing is people think they are protected more, which they are not, by the huge car. I have seen some that can't even stay in there line on the road cuz they can't drive them for being too big. You're biased cuz your daddy has 2 of them.

A Prius has 104 g/km CO2 emissions.

A Hummer H3 has 346 g/km of CO2 emissions - more than 3 times as much.  Though it's not as bad as the Cadillac Escalade at 383 g/km.

An average car gets around 150-170 g/km - less than half the H3 emissions.

Just because it's not the worst doesn't mean it's not really, really bad for the environment.

Its somewhat the same reason why in every large school class the majority will pick the weak one to bully: it makes children who wish they were adults feel better because they can look down on the weak one.  They get bossed around by their parents at home, so at school its their turn to be the Boss, as it were.

In the case of Hummers versus everything else, its the people who want to control what everybody else do who have selected "Hummers" to bear the brunt of environmental bullying.  They themselves know they are guilty of causing Global Warming via whatever car they drive to work, so they select Hummers because they are big, expensive, and highly visible compared to other cars on the road.  And by  blaming hummers for every environmental problem from Global Warming to Acid Rain they create a smokescreen to hide their own guilt.  And that guilt lies with every person who has a car with a gas tank, be it a Cadillac, or a Hummer or yes, a Prius.   Because every one of them emits CO2!

In short, its called the Greener Than Thou Principle.

My 4 wheel drive ford ranger gets around 18mpg. (my escort gets 36-38) One of my friends has a hemi dodge that barely gets 12mpg.  

Some people are offended by what they see as a blatant display of wealth.

My opinion is this- Hummers and other large / heavy / tall vehicles are bad for passengers in smaller vehicles when collisions occur.  

Everyone pays the cost of our fuel usage at the pumps.  Less demand = lower prices.
