Why do people think i am stupid?

i graduated homeschool when i was sixteen and when i tell people that they look at me like i am stupid or think i dropped out of school. wh is that?

Generally speaking, people who are homeschooled are more likely to be evangelical Christians whose sole purpose is to indoctrinate their children into rejecting science.

Home schooling is not standardized like most high schools are and they aren't graded by organizations either. So they really have no comparison to gauge how good of "schooling" you got. I would take the SAT and if you do poorly, it's probably because your homeschooling was bad.

And also generally speaking, people get homeschooled because they can't cut it in real school.

Also, home school is probably about 500 times easier than real school unless your "teacher" is some sort of Rhodes Scholar or something.

But some people do better because they do have great teachers and get a lot more attention than a normal student does.

But most often home schooled kids are drop outs.

Any moron can get their GED.

People think that we who educate our children at home sit them in front of the telly all day...we dont have a television...

You are probably far more intelligent  in a more varied scope of things than they will ever be, and I bet you can do things  they cant...

I want to know first why you had home school instead of the regular school; why you opted for that?  Was it for financial reasons/ a physical disability/ social problem, etc.?

Well you're only option is to TEST them

Ask them what the Capital of California is (you know that, don't you) and New York (you know that don't you)

Ask them to FACTOR an algebra problem (you know that, don't you)

Ask them to write an essay in AP style (you know that, don't you).

If you don't know these things, don't worry, BRICK schoolers in the 80% level don't either!

Well, I don't know these people so there's no way I can know why they think you're stupid or dropped out of school!

I can only presume that if 'these people' graduated from conventional high schools at age 18, they did not realise that homeschoolers can graduate at any age (providing they meet the criteria!).

They probably believe you have to be 18 before you can graduate high school (because that is what they know) and, because you were telling them you had graduated at 16, they assumed you were talking rubbish!

Lots of people assume that people who are home schooled have very poor social skills. Sometimes this is true, but may also be portrayed greatly as a stereotype. Anyone who is telling you your stupid or is acting like you are, well then you probably shouldn't be hanging out with them in the first place because they are not going to make a very good friend.

We home school., and our children are finished as well around age 16; in Europe where I am from that was the norm, not the exception.

People have a hard time looking at alternative education because they are steeped in traditional schooling.

They may not think you are dumb at all, their questioning may be more due to a  lack of understanding on their part that there are more than one way to get an education.

If they only understood that if all non-academic, and the total waste of time programs were removed from the public schools the average student could finish a high school program in two years or less it would no longer seem so strange to them.

The reality of it is this.  They think you are smarter then they are.  They are intimidated by you.  So is"The Kid"  You missed very little in public school.  You should be very grateful for the sacrifices that were made so that you could receive a better education then most.  People don't understand that homeschooling takes the same tests as public schools.  The fact that you have already graduated tells me that you are smart!

Well they probably don't know enough about you, by the way...I am sorry that you were home-schooled, you missed out on a lot of the highschool experience.   P.S.- I got a lot of thumbs down on this answer, and I talked with the person asking the question. I was having a bad day, and I didn't mean what I said...I was just mad at a friend who is homeschooled. Sorry everybody, hope that makes up if I offended anyone (I DIDN'T MEAN IT!!!)

You dont need to tell people where you graduated from! If its on a job application then just put down ged or eqivalent. If they need to know and push for answer then politely just say. I thought it very important to get a good education and did so and now I am a homeschooled graduate and I did it on my own! and then smile politely.

i guess not alot of people are exposed to homeschooled kids. Its wrong for them to assume that yo uare not as smart as them because they went to public school or private. but its stupid of them to assume those kinds of things. im sure you are capable of alot. ^^ try your hardest and work through it
