Question:

Why do people think is ok to...?

...treat me with disrespect (not just a lack of respect) simply because I work behind the desk at a hotel? They do this both in person and on the phone.

Frequently I will answer the phone, patiently answer a guest's question, then hear a *click* without so much as a "thank you." When did this become proper manners toward anyone, service-industry worker or no?

I also have guests who come in and think that they can demand things that any reasonable person would not expect to find free in a hotel. For example, I have many people demand for me to turn on the juice machines in the lobby (which are clearly marked for breakfast only; I work second shift, 3pm-11pm) and state that they are paying for a room and want their juice. Apparently paying for a room gives a guest the right to treat the desk clerk like trash.

I understand that some people who check into hotels may have had a bad flight or something of that sort, but the hotel I work at is not in a major city. Our town does not have an airport, it barely even has a taxi service. We rarely get any "businessman" types, our guests are mostly construction workers and people passing through on trips up and down the state.

Is their behavior actually rude, or am I being oversensitive? (I realize working in the service industry requires thicker skin than usual, but I don't think I am entitled to any less respect than would be given to anyone else.)

  1. Because that's the ignorance of the people of today.

You'll find no matter what job you have, or what position you work in, there will always be someone there to show you disrespect.

    Sad but true.

Most human beings in this day and age have re-taught themselves manners and Etiquette, and that to step on people is the only way to getting what they want.

I'm 14, and even I being so young find the way some people act these days, absolutely disgusting.

Next time someone tells you to turn on the juice machine when it's not the proper time, after you've already told them politely, "no", then tell them that you, following the rules of your job, can't turn the machine on, but if they'd like to give it a shot then they can go for it.

    Good luck!

  2. I agree it's kinda disapearing these days.  Do you have a sign posted above the juice machine stating the times?  just an idea.

One thing w/people today is they are OVERLY stressed and seem to take it out on whom ever happens to be near by.  I guess working in retail for 15+ years I've made sure that I am ALWAYS kind to the person i'm opposite of.

Sorry you have to deal with such awfull people.  Just remember no matter what you say do it with a smile...lol it confuses some...

  3. No, you're right they are being rude. Talk to your manager about removing the juice machines (if you can I am imagining a small table machine) or remove the cord if its the kind that has a removable cord. When people used to ask me to do things for them when  I was working that I couldn't do. I would always reply: Sure I can do that for you, but when I get fired for doing it can I move in with you? I have a lot of bills I hope you can cover...

They catch on sometimes more so that way then just coming out and saying No I can't do that.

Just keep on smiling and be polite to them more angrier they get the worst they look.

  4. It is not because of your job. Everyone calling you acting rude is also being treated badly by their bosses, etc. It is a sign of our times. The experts including comedian Jeff Foxworthy will tell you our bodies and minds as humans were not meant to be constantly text messaging, on the cell phone, and constantly busy busy. When we do not act like nature intended you get chaos. I love technology but still rarely talk on the phone and will NEVER text message. What do I have to tex that is so important. People now a days including lots I work with talk nonstop as if they are talking about important stuff. IN actuality they give me a headache. Maybe I am old school but old school is revered in lots of cultures........Bottom line, these are jerks who are being rude to you. My coworker is going to Florida this week and I worry about the hotel staff since this coworker is a nonstop talker.....You know, I am a generation Xer but I do have hope that the Millenials will bring back cordial relationships to this society.

  5. Yes, it's rude. This is a reflection of their upbringing and not anything you did.

Just learn the phrase. "I'm sorry sir/ma'am but I'm not allowed to do that"

  6. It's rude.

  7. This behavior is rude. I also work at a hotel I work the a (7-3) and b (3-11) shifts.

I hate how people think it is ok to treat front desk like c**p. Does your employers do that too? I worked at a howard johnson hotel and we had some of the rudest people come through there. It was closed down and we now are a different hotel but things are the same.

It sucks and we just have to smile and roll with the punches.
