That can be said about other businesses, too.  I have today off but was MANDATED to take vaction time to do so. Otherwise I would have had to work my usual ten hour day.  I agree with the observation of other, it's all about MONEY.

Not everyone celebrates Christmas and most people that work holidays know they will be doing so and make arrangements. They celebrate Christmas Eve or before the restaurant is scheduled to be open. Yes it can be a pain, but spending time with friends and family shouldn't be so restricted; they will understand. Many churches even offer Christmas Eve or early  Christmas morning mass to accommodate people that have to work.

My dad, whose a computer programmer, has worked many Christmas Eves and Days. We just choose a different day to celebrate, either the day after or perhaps the weekend before. It was always the same as Christmas, just a different day, and sometimes this meant getting presents early. That's never a bad thing ;)

While I would always want to spend Christmas with my family I have friends who do not believe in celebrating Christmas and actually feel more places should be open.  So I understand their point of view.  I also spent a Christmas by myself once and because my family wasn't in town I ended up working (waitressing at the time) and it kept my  mind off the fact that no one would be home when I got there.  I still think people should have the option of not working... I don't think it should be mandatory but why not stay open...  not everyone practises Christian holidays or beliefs.

Yes, but for some it is all about making money.  Some places will open no matter what.

Yes, to everything everyone has said...and you usually get paid time and a half if you are working a holiday. If you work in a restaurant you usually know from the beginning of your employment that said restaurant is open on all major holidays, so it is your choice to be employed there.

I did not think that any restraunts were open today.  I think that Christmas is a time to be with family, but it is all about money I the Waltons thought they could make money Wal-Mart would be open today.

If you go to a Chinese restaurant where the employees are Chinese, chances are none of the workers celebrates Christmas.  If you're Jewish, eating Chinese food on Christmas is practically a tradition.  Plus, many restaurant workers don't get paid if they don't work, and they probably don't mind making a bit of money.

And hotels are open 24/7/365.

I agree with you everything should be closed.  Everyone wants to spend Christmas with their loved ones.  But there are people who have to work all they can to make ends meet.  Others who really don't have family or friends and who would just as soon work.  Hopefully they are making double-time (double pay).

In any case, if anyone does goe out to a restaurant today, be nice to the staff and anyone who has to work today.

I worked for 15 years in the food service industry and worked 12 out of 15 Christmases. Unfortunately thats the nature of the industry. You work when everybody else is "playing"  and that undortunately includes Christmas Day.  Any waiter, waitress, chef or other  food serice employee needs to understand that and get used to it or get  into a different industry.

Yes they do. So do Doctors, nurses, ambulance drivers, firefighters, police officers, etc...

Most who know they have to work on a holiday, try to schedule a celebration on an alternate day, as inconvenient as that is, it works for some.

If you look around and listen to the greetings of the season, you would be led to believe most people don't believe in Christmas anyway. It's just "Happy Holidays" now, so you can celebrate any day. I don't agree with that sentiment, I still celebrate Christmas on Christmas day and all year long in my faith.

I'm sorry if you are among those who have to work today.

Try to have a Merry Christmas anyway.

You might also take comfort in knowing that many people who have nowhere to go on Christmas often find comfort at a restaurant, the movies, or wherever they go to connect with people when the fortunate are with those they love.
