Why do people think "going green" is so important?

It's nothing but another feel-good thing. We've been recycling, learning not to waste, reducing pollution, and reducing dumping hazardous materials into oceans for years now. And even if we didn't, we've still been around for 2000 years. All of a sudden, now people are jumping on this "get green" bandwagon. Funny. My water's clean, my air is clean, the sun is shining, and the trees are coming back from the winter.

Oh, and for all the extra money green people waste going green, you're killing more trees to make those dollars. So put that in your pipe and smoke it.

  1. Because of global warming, we need to preserve what the world has like oil because things like that take millions of years. Why would you not want to help the environment? And the money thing makes no sense. Everyone uses money.

  2. your great great grandchildren will suffer from what we do today. is that their falut? no. smoke THAT.

  3. I agree.. It's a fad.  People just jump on the bandwagon because it's the cool thing to do right now.  People are so gullible.

  4. I have an idea for you. Instead of throwing away your garbage just throw out in your yard. Then go buy some dangerous chemicals and put it in your drinking supply. Also don't recycle, we can just make stuff out of new materials!

NOW just see how long it takes you to change your attitude if you were actually to do this. Then imagine EVERYONE doing this. "Going Green" has been many peoples passion for years and I'm glad to see people care about our planet and are joining the bandwagon. The Earth has only so much to offer and it is getting destroyed so fast. Some one has to care for it and why not us? We have caused the majority of the problems. I really hope you join many people as they not only try to save their home but yours too.

For your info.--US money is not made of paper, it is cloth fibers!

  5. why do people think going green is important? hmm? maybe its because our earth is extremely polluted and finally we are trying to help it by making it cleaner with less waste products filling our landfills. Also maybe its because we have a lot of endangered animals and we keep taking away their environments by looking for MORE products to make and MORE things to take away from them like oil or trees because people are extremely wasteful and don't care what happens to the earth, but what they don't understand is that what they are doing is killing their earth for their future children. soon the only way a child is going to see and elephant, cheetah,  panda or any other animal that WAS in the wild, is in a zoo.

  6. You're right, your water is clean, your air is clean, and the sun is shining (don't know how that's affected one way or the other). However, all of these things are true because people have worked to keep them that way, or to make them that way. If you look back 50 to 100 years in America, the air and water quality were miserable in almost every urban area. But people worked hard to clean things up, and now many places are much better than they were. However, the argument that just because things are fine where you are must mean that they are fine everywhere is a logical fallacy. It would be like saying "I don't have cancer, therefore, cancer is not a problem for anyone and no one should look for a cure for cancer because it is simply not an issue".

Fact, people that actually reduce their impact save money. People think that going green is important because they want to save money for more important things, and have an ethical issue with polluting their own environment, or exporting their pollution to people who are too poor to control what toxins are present in their community.

Also, the "go Green " bandwagon is a very amero-centric view of the global environmentalist movement. Sure, its a fad for a few people in this country, but globally it is a dire struggle for life for millions, if not billions, of people.

  7. Your air is not as clean as it could be, it costs a lot of money to keep the water clean enough for human uses  -- and way too much of it is far from "clean" -- but yes, the sun is shining.

Going green for me isn't a bandwagon thing.  I recycle, compost, buy fair trade products when possible, drink shade-grown coffee, plant native plant species in an organic garden  -- including as many trees as the yard will allow -- I don't burn wood in the fireplace very often, and I volunteer and work to help educate people about the natural world around them.

That said, I think that if awareness is increased as to how valuable it is to live sustainably, then I won't judge the "johnny come late-lies," or worry about others investing their dollars as they wish.

It's more than a "feel good thing."  My grandson gets to come visit and learn about slugs and spiders and birds and lizards and all the aromatic plants in Grandma's garden.  Since he was born, being green for me is important because I'm doing my part to ensure that his future world will be a good one.

As for the "all of a sudden" comment, native Americans lived sustainably for thousands of years.

  8. It's because we need to protect our environment and it's for our future. I just think that people need to protect our environment or we are going to have no environment at all.

  9. Reducing local pollution is fine, but a lot of this is feel-good stuff. If we outsource heavy manufacturing to countries with no pollution controls and then ship it around the world we're just moving the problem overseas, we're not fixing it. Pollution is the number one killer in China right now.

The icon of the 'green movement', those shiny Prius hybrids are a great example. Emissions are low, it doesn't suck up too much gas, but you're not considering the impact of constructing it in the first place. Smelting the aluminum, lithium and steel to build one is not exactly low impact.

In short, if you want to be green, buy stuff used or fix what you've got now. It may not be glamorous but it makes a heck of a lot more sense.

  10. It's about the future and still, many people doesn't seem to care about this problem.

  11. to put it simply (i dont really like answers that take up like ten paragraphs), "going green" is just a fad. it makes celebrities and other rich people look good when they "contribute."

I myself have always done a little here and there to recycle, conserve, etc. Not just to make myself feel good so to say, but actually help. It's my future, my childrens' future, and if we don't protect our enviornment, there might not be any grandchildren!

  12. The genus homo (we're homo sapiens) has lived for millions of years on this earth not 2000.  It is not until recently, most people point to the industrial revolution, that homo sapiens have really started to alter their original environment.  As cellular beings, there are certain requirements to stay healthy.  Clean air, relatively clean water, and food are basic necessities.  Asthma has been linked to air pollution (reference the valley area of Los Angeles) and some are suggesting cancer.  Pesticides used on foods are harmful (various cancer cases of field workers) in my opinion even though scientists are saying it's still uncertain.  This sudden over development without known consequences in recent human history is probably why there is a huge green movement.

  13. I guess that sums up the problem..... we have everything ... and still want more. So we can even afford to buy it from those who cannot spare it. The UK throws away a third if the food it buys (why care!) and our recycling level is the lowest in Europe (we've been recycling for years, but not very much). Not sure we have clean air, our asthma levels are amongst the highest. We have clean, drinking water (we can even wash our cars and set our sprinklers going using drinking water, but hundreds of millions of people cannot access any clean water at all)

PS would not recommend you smoke a pipe, its bad for your health and not a green thing to do!!
