Why do people think that Russia can beat the US and NATO if we were to help georgia?

I mean why do people think that sure Russia has its allies but China isn't stupid they wouldn't have anything to gain by helping Russia if we were to help Georgia so China wouldn't heklp Rusia Iran probly would help but their surronded by 3 flanks and wouldn't last very long......

Than were jsut left with Russia their the second strongest military power however they have a very very weak economy I mean if NATO were to slap a oil embargo on them their economy would go in colapse.......if we help Georgia by sending forces and slaping a oil embargo on Russia Russia wouldn't last mroe than a month so why is it all these young idiots think that Russia could actuly stand a chance aginst NATO and the US?

Looks like you never got around a history book to learn about the world we live in.

First, you should know that Russia was never beaten in a conventional war, not even when Napoleon conquered Moscow, or the Germans were near Moscow during WW2. Russia is simply too big, 2 times the size of the US, nobody has enough soldiers to occupy all the Russian territory.

Second, Russia still got enough nukes to destroy any (or all) countries. They got thousands of ICBMs, and dozens of nuclear submarines that lurk the oceans and can surface anywhere, at any moment, and launch ICBMs. So even if you nuke the whole Russia, and take out all their cities, all their airports and bombers, all their land-based ICBMs silos, some day, next week or next month some Russian subs will surface, and do their job. And the US missile shield is a joke, maybe you can stop a few ICBMs, but not all... and even you you stop them all and blow them up in mid air, the radiaton fallout would spread all around the planet and kill everyone in a few weeks. A war agaist Russia (or agains China, or against any country that has nukes) is the end of mankind.

And third, Russia does not need oil, they do not import oil, but export (they are the second largest exporter after Saudi Arabia) ... they supply oil and gas to all Europe, so if a war starts, all Western Europe will freeze in winter.

Those are 2 different styles of warfare, why can't people understand this? Vietnam and Afghanistan are perfect examples of limited warfare. A war against Russia would be on the level of something like WW2, in other words, total warfare.

I'm pretty sure we'd beat the Russians in a confrontation, but I hope it doesn't come down to nukes because lots of innocent people will die. People talk about this like a football game when its not. This is war dude and its nothing to joke around with. They have their own cool technology to that they can bomb us with, and I wouldn't be surprised if the Chinese lent the Russians some of their own high tech ****. Plus those ******* are tough fighters, and if we're fighting in Russian territory, they're gonna have a huge advantage over our soldiers.

I still think we'd win though, I just hope it doesn't come down to a war between the U.S.A and Russia, 'cus A LOT of people would die, and thats not cool. Plus, we don't really have a reason to start a fight with Russia, we're still not sure on who started the war in the first place. There's WAY to many accusations and plenty of them are false, so until our government finds out who started this **** in the first place, we'll see what happens.

the reason America is militarily superior is because our scientists are smarter. in my opinion in a fist fight most other countries would win because they are tougher because they have harsher living environments. and mentall other countries are more brutal.

If Russia and the United States of America ever got into a full blown military conflict, human civilization would come to an end. Both country's ICBMs would be deployed, as well as that of most other country's with such capabilities.

Nuclear winter would follow and the fall-out would wipe out the larger percentage of organisms more sophisticated than rats. A hand full of people would survive in bunkers here and there, or remote islands in locations fortunate enough to receive the smallest amount of radioactive contamination. After awhile, even the majority of those people would starve to death or eventually die of radiation poisoning.

After about two hundred years the radiation levels would be reduced enough that a few million lucky survivors, scattered across the globe, would inherit the earth and they would have all of the knowledge and technology of the middle ages.

Hands down the USA combined with NATO can defeat Russia and save The Republic of Georgia, however I think the main argument that helps enforce the idea that Russia can now defeat the USA and NATO is that the USA has their hands full with Afghanistan and Iraq currently.

The answer is really very simple. If the US and NATO cannot beat the bare-footed and crudely-armed Taliban fighters in Afghanistan, how could you expect it to beat a powerful nation like Russia?. Try to remember the history of Vietnam War, why did the US troops lost against an under-equipped and inferior enemy?. Material superiority doesn't necessarily win wars. The Russians had proven that in the last century against Napoleon, then in WWII by defeating the mighty German Army. Hitler believed that German military superiority would win him wars. In theory, he was correct. Germany had the most advanced and awesome military hardware and tactics at the time. But then, history had proven him wrong.

If you look back at history and find out why mighty empires fell (from the Roman Empire, Ottoman Empire, etc) up to the modern times, you'll see a common pattern that led to their downfall (they all thought that they are the best and nobody can challenge them). That pattern of thinking will never change, no matter how improved and lethal the war-machines may get. History just keeps on repeating itself, and yet you never learn from it.

The Russians are one of the largest oil exporters, and have a GREAT economy. They control most of the oil that travels to Europe

Because of our current military situation.  But in all circumstances if we got involved in Gerogia and it started a war we would have the ability to advance and hit Russia.  We have a larger and more advanced fleet, a bigger and more advanced military and if need be we could reinstitute the draft.  It will never happen but it is because people do not truly understand the capabilities of the US people and military.

My guess by your barely legible paragraphs that you're from Europe or somewhere outside the US, so of course they think Russia could beat the US. Heck, Europe probably thinks France could beat the US. Suffice it to say that the US is still the most powerful nation on earth by far, because contrary to what Obama portrays and the "let's surrender to terrorists" Democrats portray, there are still plenty of us that served our country proudly and would still, to this day, give our lives for our country.

You have to believe in what you're fighting for, and while there are millions of Obama-ites that wouldn't fight for our country, I'd have to believe that there are a lot more Americans that still believe in America despite the Democrats than there are Russians that truly believe in the oppression under which they live.

Russia and Nato would never try to invade Russia first Russia never losed a war or never got conquered by an occupying invader( now i know theres always a room for the first time but i doubt it), second what makes you think Russias allies wont help them?

If it comes down to a showdown it would be America and Nato( probably with israel too)against Russia and its allies( China, most of Central Asia, Venezuela, maybe cuba, and probably north korea( dont underestimate this guys, ther's a reason U.S haven't invaded them)

so in short it would never happen and it should never happen, World War 3 would make World War 2 look like a childs play.  Half the worlds population would be gone, the environment would be ****** up and the human races future would look horrible.

Its difficult to expect any pro-Russian stuff from CNN, right?

On the first day of fighting there was a nice movie by CNN. Featuring dark night and bright flares of starting missiles in the background of voice telling us about Russian invasion. Wait, it was only evening in Georgia and russians have joined war in the midday. It takes time to send the movie to some studio and prepare some breaking-news, at least an hour I'd say. And camera men should travel that to the front, Tskhinvali city is far from Georgian capital city of Tbilisi. So that couldn't be that night, this is previous night: August 07. And there were no russian forces in Georgia at that moment... So missiles are Georgian!

Lets take a closer look on them. They're flying in the very fast rate. Axelerate, then rocket engine stops and disappears in the night. Do you know what this weapon is? It is 'Grad' soviet era indirect missile artillery designed to kill lots of infantry in the field. It is useless against tanks and strongpoints. And it is very inacurate... Warhead turns into numerous splinters on detonation effectively killing everyone around. And 'Grad' provides rain of such rockets. Rain of death.

Do you imagine this? Without declaration of war, warnings et.c. in the middle of night, when people are sleeping at their homes someone bombards city with 'Grad'. This is not a police action against rebels, this attempt to kill as many of them (children, women, everyone) as possible and make others run in terror. That exactly happened. Saakashvili is a war criminal.

Do you still think US should back Georgia?

I don't think it's a matter of who can beat who, I think it's a matter of do we want another war on our hands.  Going against Russia isn't the same thing as going against Iraq insurgents.  In Iraq, our troops have been killed one at a time.  If we fight Russia, no matter who wins, there will be tens of thousands of casualties on both sides.  That's something I'm not looking forward to.
