Why do people think that blond women are unintelligent?

Totally agree!!! I'm not a blond - in summer I'm a dirty blond and in winter I'm a light brown- but people believe in the dumb -blond stuff are total stereo types. Everybody has their DUH moments! and if you happen to know a blond who has them very frequently it is just a coincidence.

Many girls dye their hair blonde BECAUSE they think guys will like them more, making them more succeptible to do things just for guys' attention, including acting ditzy because they think guys will like it (even though they often don't).  Does that make sense?  It's a chain of events.

yeah but a brunette can be stupid and people are just like 'they're stupid' but when a blonde persons stupid they make a big deal out of it and blame it on the blonde so everyone brings attention to it if you know what i mean. that doesnt actually make sense but i know what i mean lol

I dont understand it either.  Its really stupid.  Not all blondes are stupid, and its just a joke to these people, but imagine how the blondes feel, they arent all air heads with only feelings for a pretty face and a big bust, everyones just completely stereotypical!

It's only a cultural stereotype pervaded by the popular media. Go look up "dumb blonde" on Wikipedia. The exact origins of the dumb blonde archetype are uncertain but really interesting :)

Interesting how you got some saying that it's women who are dumb enough to bleach their hair that are the reason; yet you have someone saying that those women are actually smart, and the natural blondes all dumb.

As a blonde with a brain, I was GOING to say that few people, if any, really believe this really stupid idea.

But then I read the answers, and I guess there really are morons who think that a person having light-colored hair means the person is stupid.

Mostly I think the reason for the comments and jokes and stuff is that it's no longer accepted to make "stupid people" jokes about ethnicities and nationalities -- when I was a child, people from Polland and their decendants got these same jokes directed at them the "dumb Pollack" jokes.

So people have this huge store of "category of stupid people" jokes, and a logic that can be used to generate more stupid-people jokes, and no other category to insert in the "stupid people" place.

So they use blonde (I edit these jokes and tell them about bleached blondes, as I do feel that the action of changing one's hair color is less than intelligent -- and at least it's based on a person's action, rather than something they are born with; but perhaps I, too, should knock it off.)

People love to tell jokes that are about people who are so clearly and obviously stupider than they are. Since it's no longer acceptable to base them on race or ethnicity, they use this category of people that have often been seen as somehow luckier or more appealing.

Everyone, however dumb, gets the jokes, because no one is really as dumb as the people in the jokes -- so they find them funny, and feel smarter than the butt of the joke.

Thus, even really stupid people can feel smarter than someone else.

Notice, though, how many of the jokes are puns -- "you've got mail" for instance. (She keeps going outside to the mailbox, rather than checking her email.)

Then there's the self-fulfilling observation. When someone with yellow hair does or says something less than bright (which every person who ever lived has done more than once in their lives), people NOTICE that case, attribute it to hair color, and mark it down as evidence.

When anyone else does a dumb thing, it doesn't count against everyone who has the same color hair, as people don't have the concept of brown hair correlating with stupidity. They don't think of their hair at all (unless to ask if they're really blonde, I suppose).

Similarly, they don't notice examples of blondes being brilliant. They notice the intelligence, but not the hair color, as it doesn't fit the preconception.

Part of the reason, BTW, I attribute this to unacceptability of racism and such is that over the course of my life I've seen the disappearance of things like "Pollack jokes" and an increase of blonde jokes.

And, many are the same joke!

When I was young, blonde was thought a good thing -- pretty. In backlash, it's a bad thing: stupid.

Still, I don't think most people think that yellow hair indicates lack of intelligence.

But I do kinda wish people would knock it off.

I don't immediately correlate it like that. In general, I subconciously correlate too much makeup with low intelligence, sorry. I also correlate tight, revealing clothing with low intelligence.

They are jealous of us. Blondes are beautiful and fun and often less inhibited. So we may say goofy things or be a little absent-minded now and then, so what. Who isn't? And being a little absent minded or silly doesn't mean we can't be intensely smart or make it through med school or become very successful. We often play dumb to get what we want, which proves us much smarter than those of you who fall for it!! hehe We actually make men a little dumber when they find themselves in our sexually empowered and overpowering presence!

Marilyn Monroe, Goldie Hawn, Kate Hudson and Jessica Simpson are a few examples of smart blondes who've played dumb to further their interests. It's a certain attitude and type of humor that we perpetuate with our playful precociousness and ingenuity. Not a bad thing really. Works for me!

You've got to give the brunettes something....we do have more fun!  And I don't think anyone *really* believes blondes are stupid.....I'm very blonde and I own my own business.  People still tease me but I know they don't really doubt my intelligence.
