  1. I think the concern is over the rate at which technology is advancing. A baby born 200 years ago is the same as a baby born today, but my cellphone can do more than most computers  20, even up to 10 years ago. There's a concern that machines will outpace and out evolve us is they ever get intelligent, and if you look at biology, something doesn't have to be smart to be a threat.

  2. Machines will NEVER possess intelligence as we know it. Despite what science-fiction tells us. They will never decide to take over the world.

However we may stupidly give them power and instructions that will make it seem that way. For all intents and purposes they will have taken over the world.

Example. You wire up your house with a computer to look after you. It makes all your decisions because you do not want to over-eat, smoke, drink; and you want to stay fit. You don't think the program out fully and the computer ends up caging you on a treadmill and refuses you food. You die. The program goes on.

Now based on history imagine how much stupider the military-industrial complex is when compared to you and your house. And how much more dangerous.

  3. Machines have already taken over the world.. we just control them.  There is potential for computers to refuse orders at some point in the future ( bug in code, "cyber terrorism", advanced AI, etc ) but it's not something I'd be overly worried about.

  4. Because we depend a lot of machines and technology.

  5. You don't live near a highway in the  path of migrating animals... almost always the machines win...

  6. Machines have taken over in a certain sense. For example, we can't feed our current population without mechanized farming. There's just too many people to be able to survive by hunting & gathering. Without a whole lot of heavy machinery on the farms you and I don't eat. You could say much the same for autos and information technology.

These things haven't taken over in the sense that they tell us what to do but we are literally dependent on machines for our survival.

  7. I think they watch too many Terminator movies.

  8. For some reason, sitting here, surrounded by machines that do everything for me...cook my food, wash my clothes, do my dishes, keep me warm, keep me cool, entertain me, take me where I want to go, etc....reading this message that was typed on a machine sent to my machine in a fraction of a second....

well, your question just struck me as being rather hilarious.

Sorry, I just had to stop and giggle.

Maybe I ought to mention that, at 57 years old, I can actually remember a time when

hold on, this is gonna shock you

    don't be scared

    OK, ready?

THERE WAS NO SUCH THING AS A "PERSONAL COMPUTER"....

    .

Yeah...it's true. I learned to type on a manual typewriter, cause we didn't even have electric typewriters in those days. For those that don't know, a typewriter is sort of like a keyboard, only with no computer attached. A manual typewriter is the same thing, but without electricity. Think of trying to drive without power steering....uh...well, never mind. Let's just say you had to WORK them keys, baby.

  9. I don't think machines will literally take over the world.

Technology has become so advanced over the last few decades and centuries that it's amazing.  Robots work in factories assembling cars and other vehicles.

I wouldn't worry about machines taking over the world.  Humans program the machines to do specific jobs.  There always can be a problem that can arise, but none like in the terminator or any of the horror movies where machines completely take over the world.

The only reason why we have power over the animals is because of technology.  They do not have as complex brains as us. We are much more capable of thinking of ideas and adapting to changes.

It is highly unlikely that machines will ever take over the world.

  10. Rational people do not.  Neo Luddites and other nut cases do.

  11. They smoke to much Herb!

  12. I don't know, but i am pretty sure machines can't do my job!
