Why do people think there's a monster in their closet?

it's a tactic used to keep children in bed because if they dont move the monster wont get them. same with monster under the bed.

literally an old wifes tale of parents who got sick of constantly sticking children back in bed

I wasn't one of those kids. I always thought that the monster or something was out to get me from the hallway. At first I slept with my doors open so that I could see the monster coming to get me but I was constantly frightened and I would sleep with the covers covering my entire body. I felt as if I was in a bubble that started at the edges of my bed to protect me but I always thought something was breathing down my neck. Eventually I learned to shut the door ^^
