Why do people think windmills, geothermal and solar are alternatives to oil?

Windmills, geothermal and solar are used to generate power while oil is used for transportation and by a small percentage (7%) of US households for heating.

  1. Electricity can also power transportation. A great deal of our driving is relatively short-distance -- to the store, to school, to work. That can be done with battery power.


  2. Because they are left wing liberal socialist Democrats. Somehow they think we can construct a windmill in every backyard and have our own electricity. I can't even imagine how much that would cost and how little it would produce. It's just nutty. The only thing we can do is conserve, have better mileage vehicles, and not drive as much. That alone will hurt the economy but there is no easy answer.

  3. Nuclear power is the way to go.  And I'm not talking about the huge nuke plants.  I mean small, one per 10,000 people or so plants.  Pebble bed reactors would be sweet, you could literally have one per small town, and have almost zero transmission loss (vs the 70% loss we see now).

    And oil will need to be around for a long time, it's the cheapest method of transportation at the moment, and until something else becomes cheaper, it'll stay that way.
