Question:

Why do people think women retaliate in divorce?

Up to 70% of divorces (depending on the state) are initiated by women.

Why do people believe it's women who retaliate against men in divorce? They are actively seeking a resolution. They are acting, not reacting.

Plus, people never consider how abusive husbands retaliate - by seeking custody (and usually getting it), by making her look like a liar when she claims abuse, by making her live in the same locale, etc. And, worse, by use of violence - b/c separation poses the greatest danger to women with abusive husbands.

Why does society continue to use the "scorned woman" stereotype and yet have nothing to say about husbands who retalitate?

  1. I doubt these women are just randomly deciding to file for divorce.  You may view it that way, but I would guess they are having problems with their spouse - which is usually a man.

  2. Let me offer a quote which I'm sure almost everyone has heard, it will answer your question.

" You b*****d !!! I'm gonna take you for everything you're worth and you'll NEVER see your kids again !!!"

Does this sound at all familiar ?

  3. Uh, isn't initiating the divorce in most cases retaliation in itself?

But if you think women don't retaliate against men in divorces (and vice versa) you don't know too many divorced people.  It happens very frequently.

Plenty of people talk about husbands that retaliate too.  They usually make the news if they're that bad.  People often actually support a woman doing it.
